Ahmadinejad: Haul Israel off to court

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaks during the international Conference of Prosecutors of Islamic Countries in Tehran on April 22.

Iran's president has called on the UN, the International Criminal Court and individual states to take legal action against Israel.

"We can prevent the repetition of such atrocities by taking several vital steps," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said at the Conference of Prosecutors of Islamic States, referring to the war crimes committed in Gaza during the recent three-week Israeli military offensive.

Ahmadinejad called for the formation of a special court at the UN General Assembly and urged the International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor to investigate the crimes committed in Gaza.

He also argued that hearings should commence in countries that have signed the Geneva Convention.

The Iranian president questioned world powers as to why the Palestinians have been deprived of their basic rights for over 60 years, saying that human rights apply to all, regardless of race, religion or sex.

Since its creation in 1948, Israel has denied Palestinian refugees, currently numbering 4.6 million, their 'Right of Return' -- an internationally recognized right which applies to all refuges worldwide.

Tel Aviv says allowing these people, who are mostly Arab Muslims, to return to their ethnic homeland will ruin 'Israel's Jewish Character'.

During his Wednesday speech, the Iranian president also took a swipe at the UN Security Council over its failure to take decisive action to end Israel's indiscriminate killing of civilians during Operation Cast Lead.

"If the Security Council is responsible for determining violations of global peace and security, then should it not issue a binding resolution against Israel when it kills the people of Gaza -- 80 percent of them civilians," said Ahmadinejad.

Throughout the Israeli military operation, the UN Security Council only issued one non-biding resolution, urging both sides to end the violence.

More than 1,350 Palestinian men, women and children lost their lives in the bloody conflict. Three Israeli civilians and 10 soldiers were also killed.
