[MahdiUniteMuslims] Zambia a Christian Country: Under-aged Children Marriage should be Punished-State Warns Parents

Zambia: State Warns Parents

25 May 2009

GOVERNMENT has warned parents against marrying off under-age children as the act ruined their chances of becoming responsible citizens.

Eastern Province Minister, Isaac Banda said the Government was not happy with the increasing number of parents forcing their children, under the age of 18, into marriages.

Mr Banda who is Lumezi Member of Parliament, was speaking at Katube Basic School in Lundazi during a development meeting.

He said it was disheartening that parents were allowing their children to be married off at a tender age even before they completed school.

The minister said parents who allowed under-aged children to be married should be punished.

"Those parents forcing their children into early marriages should be punished because it is disadvantaging the girl-child. Some are not completing school due to early marriages which is a bad trend," Mr Banda said.

He said the Government would like to see that more children were educated by 2015 in order to attain millennium development goals (MDGs).

In another development, Mr Banda has bemoaned the bad state of dormitories at Katube Open Air Prison.

He said the dormitories were not fit for human habitation and ordered the prisonservice in Lundazi to maintain the dormitories.

Mr Banda said that if the prison dormitories were not maintained, diseases could break out.

Mr Banda said the prisoners were human beings who needed a good living environment rather than being subjected to poor conditions as was the case at Katube prison.

And Lundazi prison officer-in-charge, George Lungu said the prisons service in Lundazi this year expected a better yield of maize.

Mr Lungu saidKatube Open Air Prison was expected to produce 4000 by 50 kilogramme bags of maize while Lundazi Main Prison was expected to produce 5000 by 50 kilogramme bag of maize.

Mr Lungu said that the main problem at theprison was the shortage of water.

He said the prison was relying on a small stream, which dried up in the dry season.
