Dear brothers and dear sisters…
FEAR OF ALLAH OR FEAR OF 9/11 PART 5
This jum'ah is a jum'ah in the aftermath of eleven years of an Islamophobia that has taken its course from the manacle imagery of Muslims all the way to impose invasions and occupations and wars upon Muslims. We tried, (as much as we could), in the last jum'ah to begin a systematic consideration of where this mainstream media presentation of the Muslims is coming from. Who's saying "the Muslims are terrorists and Muslims did 9/11" and Muslims are now in the past few days are responsible for the events that took place in Egypt and in Libya and from there on in other countries? The facts are not in yet pertaining to these past few days. We don't have the names of the individuals, even though some names have been mentioned; we don't have a court of law that have sorted out this issue in a fair and equitable manner. What we do have though is a rush of judgement. Muslims of self determination- not any Muslims; there is specific Muslims that are slain in the media. A peculiar segment of Muslims is targeted by the corporate media to be blamed for the event of 9/11 eleven years ago this week and the events of this week and everything in between and probably everything that may be coming down the pipeline. In order for us to have a healthy and a sound understanding of this commotion we will step back and take a look at the larger picture. When we take a look at the larger picture with the words of Allah and the works of His Prophet is it true that we come out looking the way they are presenting us and the way some of us are presenting ourselves? Is that the way we look? This is what we will familiarise ourselves with this jum'ah and in the jum'ahs to come even though the hajj is approaching us and it seems like there may appear to be an interference of sorts in a couple or a few jum'ah but we'll try to pursue this so that there's no longer any confusion at least in our minds as to where all of this is coming from.
We, the Muslims, know and we acknowledge and we affirm the validity of all revealed scriptures- At Torah, Al Injeel, Az Zabur, Al Qur'an- that's part of who we are. In a sense, these who call themselves Jews and Christians, etc. who have scripture and who have revelation or whatever is left of it in their possession are part of us. This is our history regardless of the way they are presenting it. They can do whatever they want but we have access to the truth coming to us from Allah and His Prophet and this truth validates the Bible, not in today's version, the original version- The Old and the New Testament. For those of you who want to, in the comfort of your own time and mind, review the ayaat one-sixty-four and one-sixty-five of Surah An Nisa'. (If) you want to look at these two ayaat, and not just read it passively (but) read it with attention and your full faculty of thought to realise that this history that we're looking at is our history. The deen of Allah is one deen. There's not many deens (or) multiple deens that He revealed to humanity and to society in the past or whatever. It's one deen.
As far as Allah is concerned, His deen is Islam… (Surah Aal Imran verse 19)
But there is another word called shari'ah. This deen in its different historical stages had differing shari'ahs, not one shari'ah. Shari'ah is the application of the laws pertaining to this deen of Islam. At one time, this deen of Islam could have been called An Nasraniya, at another time this deen was called Al Yahudiyah but it was in its essence (and) in its generic material Islam, i.e. yielding to Allah. But when it came to the organisation of society along with this deen Allah revealed Ash Shari'ah- shari'ata Musa, Shari'ata Muhammad. These are the two main shari'ahs in the history of revelation that survive until today. One of them survives sound and that is the Muhammadi shari'ah, the shari'ah from the Qur'an and the Sunnah and the other one is the Musawi shari'ah that has been distorted throughout all of these centuries and all of these times; but this is the crux of the matter here. This is where we begin and on the actual but hidden problem. When we read about Musa (alayhi as salaam) in the Qur'an we don't read about someone who is blood thirsty or someone who is antagonistic or someone who takes revenge and extends that into further generations etc. as we will come to realise in several more minutes. When we read about Musa in the Qur'an we see an image of a person, (we can't here be exhaustive, we have to be selective), we see a character that goes to the Pharaoh. In these ayaat in the Qur'an Allah says to Musa and his brother Harun (alayhima as salaam)
Go to the Pharaoh and speak to him in a non-abrasive way, in such a manner this Pharaoh may come to his conscience or he may feel our aura… (Surah Ta-Ha verse 44)
You see- Musa here is not a combative character. Let's speak to this big shot (or) to this super power executive about what Allah is telling us to say to him.
They said, (they spoke to Allah saying), but our sustainer we're afraid that this Pharaoh may go to the extremes with us or may bare down on us with his power. Allah replied: I am with both of you and I can certainly hear and see what is going to happen. (Surah Ta-Ha verse 45-46)
Allah said to these two individuals who were scared. Sometimes we're going to have to make this practical for you and bring these ayaat into today's world- we have Muslims today who go to the White House and meet with these types of characters who have power (and) who have influence (and) they can do practically whatever they want to do, but do they go listening to Allah or do they go listening to whatever agenda they have on their own minds? When Musa and his brother wanted to go to the highest office in the land they were afraid. The certainly were not sent an invitation but they were guided by Allah- this is what you do and they went and they spoke truth to power. They said to this Pharaoh
Release Bani Isra'eel from your custody and let them go with us. (Surah Ash Shu'ara' verse 17)
So far with all of these Muslims speaking heads who have gone to public figures and Imams in Masajid and Masajid khateebs- does anyone speak truth to power there? You know some of these people (and) some of you know them personally that is why, brothers and sisters, we want to keep this to your own common sense. We want you to understand. You don't need us to be around every Friday breaking down these ayaat for you in the sense that we just did in the past few minutes. You should be able to fill in the blanks.
They said to this power figure in the land we have come to you with an ayah from your Sustainer and peace be upon those who follow forth on a path of guidance. (Surah Ta-Ha verse 47)
Here we go back to the initial point that we are trying to make- the image of Musa and Bani Isra'eel as presented to us by the impeccable and unadulterated Qur'an is an image of common sense and a psychology of peace. We saw in another incident when Musa was also in the presence of Phiraun and around Phiraun were the Sahara' (or) the Saahirs and they came to realise that Musa was no Saahir, Musa is the real thing. Musa is right. What did Musa do? He came to them with threats, intimidation, terror, violence (or) any of this? No. The result of that was they were convinced even though the Pharoah said to them
… I am going to cut off your limbs diagonally- right hand with left leg and left hand/arm with right leg- that is how I am going to cut you up and I am going to crucify you on the trunks of date palm trees… (Surah Ta-Ha verse 71)
This is what the Pharoah says to those who are his advisers, to those who are his confidents and to those who he had hope would defeat Musa. When they turned to Musa's side, this is what he said "I'll do with you."
… I am going to cut off your limbs diagonally- right hand with left leg and left hand/arm with right leg- that is how I am going to cut you up and I am going to crucify you on the trunks of date palm trees… (Surah Ta-Ha verse 71)
When a person knows the truth and when people know the truth they stand on principal. We don't even have today the calibre and the character of Muslims who can stand on principal just like these Sahara' who just in a matter of these few minutes became committed to Allah. But this is the type of imagery that we have. This is the history of Bani Isra'eel. This, in a sense, is part of our history. If it's not part of our history, what's it doing in the Qur'an? We read about it more than any other theme. Almost a third of the Qur'an is exhausted to detail for us the mistakes and the errors and the sins and the confrontational attitude and the hard headedness of Bani Isra'eel and you tell us "that's not part of our history?!" Where are you in this world? So that's what we have. We don't have this type of violence and the terror that's projected out there in the public concerning us. Where's this? You find that for us in the Book of Allah.
Now, we go, (and we don't do this; this is probably the first time that you hear us quoting from the sources of those who call themselves Judeo-Christians to see what the image of Bani Isra'eel is. If we can get these two images clear in our mind then we will know where all of this projection and all of this visualizations of this terror and violence is coming from. These words are concerning Bani Isra'eel in Isaiah fifty-seven, four and five it is said and we quote, (of course, brothers and sisters as long as we've been in it, you know there's different translations and obviously this is one of their translations- it doesn't come from us or it doesn't come from any Muslim), "come, stand forth you sons of a soothsayer, you spawn of an adulterer and a harlot. Who is the target of your jests? Against whom do you open your tongues? Children of sin that you are, spawn of a lie, burning with lust under the terry bents under every spreading tree and killing children in the gorges under the rocky clefts." This is the first quote from the Bible that is read today. We are not saying that these are God's revealed words. We Muslims know better but there are people in this world all around us who are mainstreaming these bloody images of Muslims who believe in these meanings. You tell us, after listening to this and reading it where violence and terrorism is coming from? In another chapter in Ezekiel seventeen, twenty and we quote, once again "I, (meaning God), will bring retribution upon him, (in reference to the people of Jerusalem), I will carry him to Babylon, bring him to judgment there." In Exodus seventeen, number fourteen, "My oath upon it- the Lord is at war with Amalek generation after generation. You shall put the inhabitants of that city to the sword." Brothers and sisters- listen to this word "sword." They say "Muslims spread their Islam by the sword." There's not an ayah in the Qur'an that has the word sword in it. Here we are- Exodus and the word sword is mentioned exactly as they try to project it on Muslims. "You shall put the inhabitants of that city to the sword. You shall lay the city under solemn ban together with everything in it. You shall gather all its goods into the square and burn both city and goods as a complete offering to the Lord, your God and it shall remain a mount of ruins never to be rebuilt." This is not Qur'an. These words conceal the attitude of violence and terror in them. We Muslims know that these words are not Allah's words but unfortunately other people around us in the Judeo-Christian societies believe these words. They say "these are God's words and this is what we have to do." Ruin cities. (It) speak about Amalek. Amalek is one of these peoples who live in and around the Holy Land. OK- they don't exist today. You can't say "Oh- there is an ethnicity or there is a people or there is a race that is called Amalek." It's not there but if you were to tune in to Zionist speeches (and) religious discourses, they will mention Amalek in the same par with the Palestinians; in other words some of them believe "today's Palestinians deserve the same treatment as Amalek" and some of them go even further and say "Arabs and Muslims deserve the same treatment." What treatment are we talking about? These are the verses- we just quoted them for you. "You shall put the inhabitants of that city to the sword. You shall lay the city under solemn ban together with everything in it." In those days, in the literature of those days there was nothing like the words curfew or siege or embargo were not there but when you read these words "you shall lay the city under solemn ban together with everything in it" doesn't it remind you of Ghazzah? Doesn't that remind you of the West Bank? "You shall gather all its goods into the square and burn both city and goods as a complete offering to the Lord, your God and then it shall remain a mount of ruins never to be rebuilt." This is not an ayah from the Qur'an. This is not something Muslims mention in their prayers, but this is definitely something that makes us understand where real violence and real terror come from. Deuteronomy twenty, from ten to sixteen, (and we quote once again). As we said, brothers and sisters, this is probably the first time we are quoting from the Bible because of the accusations and the calumny that is coming our way. We, the Muslims, never read these verses. We are sure (that for) most of you this may be the first time you've heard these verses from the Bible. Many of us are under the impression these are Ahl Kitaab i.e. these are the People of the Book. We want the goodness and the morality in these books that remain until this day to trump these types of words that have become policies and some of us cannot even compare the policies that are causing us to bleed with the theories that remain just that- fancy words in a fancy book. Deuteronomy twenty, from ten to sixteen, describes their behavior in war. You don't have to limit yourself to those days, think about these words in today's world. "When you advance to a city to attack it make an offer of peace." Up to here it sounds alright, but it goes on. "If the city accepts the offer and opens its gates to you then all the people in it shall be put to forced labor and shall serve you." That could be another word for slavery, it could be another word for Colonialism. If you read these words and you look at the real world, then you'll understand where all of this is coming from. Once again, we're going back to the verse in the Bible. "If it (the city) does not make peace with you but offers you battle you shall besiege it and the Lord, your God will deliver it in your hands. You shall put all its males to the sword." Once again you hear that word, the sword. It's never mentioned in the Qur'an but it's mentioned multiple times in the Bible. If you're looking and listening to today's world, you'd think the sword is a Qur'anic word and not a Biblical word! (Do) you see how they've turned it the other way around? (Do) you see how they play with your emotions and your thoughts? Once again, we're back to the text (and) to the quote. "You shall put all its males to the sword..." Meaning what? Kill them. Execute them "… but you may take the women, the dependants and the cattle for yourselves and plunder everything else in the city." If anyone wanted to look at grassroots Colonialism and Imperialism, here you have it. Once again, we're back to the text and the quote. "You may enjoy the use of the spoils of your enemies which the Lord, your God gives you." Now tell us- racism, Colonialism, Imperialism (and) today the new chapter is globalization. Tell us, isn't this the bedrock of these philosophies and ideologies, constructs (and) militaries? Aren't we just reading it here? Do you find it in the Qur'an anywhere? We go back to the text- their words not ours, their translations not ours. "That is what you shall do to cities at a great distance." Let's say, in Iran, that's their great distance or in Arabia or in North Africa. What you just heard is what they are ordered according to their beliefs to do to these cities. But what if it's near them (or) under their control (or) under their suzerainty or under their occupation? What happens then? "As opposed to those which belong to nations near at hand…" This is their words. PK- what do they do to nations near at hand (or) under their occupation (or) under their legal system (or) under their military control? Back to the text. "… in the cities of these nations whose land the Lord, your God, is giving you as a patrimony you shall not leave any creature alive." Holy words?! Sacred text as some people believe! Now, is anyone surprised that what is happening to the Palestinians and the Arabs and the Muslims today can be traced back all the way to these words? We're going back to the text. Don't let some people confuse what we say with what the texts say, we want you to listen closely. This is their religious text speaking. It says "You shall annihilate them." You hear that? God according to their beliefs has given them permission exterminate us if we live under their political and military and economic control. They can exterminate us. It is said "you shall annihilate them." Then it names the ethnic groups at that time, Hittites, Amorites, Panolites, Prizite, Hyphites, Jepozites, etc. So the fundamentalists from this Judeo-Christian interpretation of the meanings of the Bible into today's world could easily replace these; instead of saying the Hittites, Amorites, Panolites, Canaanites, Prizite, Hyphites, Jepozites, etc. you can say Palestinians, the Lebanese, the Syrians, the Egyptians, the Jordanians, etc. Annihilate them! We, the Muslims, are told by those who repeat a lie a million times "we are people of violence, that we are terrorists." Once again, "you shall annihilate them, (all of these ethnic groups), as the Lord, your God commanded you." Did you listen to that? Let these words dwell in your mind every time you hear them accusing us of these acts. Deutronomy seven, one through two, "when the Lord, your God, brings you into the land which you are entering to occupy and drives out many nations before you, when the Lord, your God, delivers them to your power and you defeat them you must put them to death." These are not Qur'anic words; these are not Islamic words. These are words that are celebrated in their Temples in the Churches and in the Synagogues- not in the Masajid. What were they saying? What do these words mean? Let's say we don't understand what these words mean, could someone step up and place these words in the meaningful world of today? Please- we beg you to do so. "When the Lord, your God, brings you into the land which you are entering to occupy…" There's occupied lands in today's world. "… and drives out many nations for you…" There are tens of millions of refugees who have been driven out. "When the Lord, your God, delivers them into your care and you defeat them, you must put them to death." Who's violent? Who's terrorist? Then it goes out to say "you must not make a treaty with them or spare them." For all of these Muslims who have bleeding hearts to sign agreements- before you sign these agreements ask the signatory on the other side what do you mean by these Biblical verses? Am I signing something with you and you're signing something else with a god that instructs you to do all these things? "When the Lord, your God, delivers them into your power and you defeat them you must put them to death. You must not make a treaty with them or spare them. You must not intermarry with them." It goes on. We can't quote here exhaustively. Another verse and we'll conclude with this. Numbers fourteen, verse 18, "The Lord longs suffering ever constant who forgives inequity and rebellion and punishes sons to the third and fourth generations." We Muslims have a scriptural rule- each one is responsible for their life.
Allah doesn't burden a soul or individual except according to the capacity and tolerance level of that individual… (Surah Al Baqarah verse 286)
Allah does not burden a person except for within the potential that He has given him (Surah At Talaaq verse 7)
The Lord, our God, punishes sons to the third and fourth generation." What does that mean in today's real world? (It) means you keep on punishing until the third and fourth generation of someone who committed something hundred or two hundred years ago? After all of this, we're going to leave this khutbah just in several more minutes and you're going to go back into that world that is inundated with lies, innuendo, character assassination, defamation (and) fabrication against us- where do we have anything near a scintilla of what you listened to, courtesy of the Bible that they honor in their war and in their relations with us?
Dear committed Muslims, brothers and sisters…
The events of the past few days that are tied with the yearly event of the eleventh of September have been so far so fuzzy and so uncertain that we still cannot comment with a measure of confidence as to what really unfolded in the past three or four days. There have been so many conflicting news items about where all of this began- "Innocence of Muslims" it is called, i.e. this piece of movie that is tantamount to garbage by friend and foe alike. Sometimes it's an Israeli Jew, sometimes it's a Coptic Egyptian (and) other times it's a combination of both. They say "follow the dollar" or "follow the money." Can someone do a little research and see because this is the bottom line- those who paid for this piece of infamy are the ones who are ultimately responsible for these bad feelings and this irritative relationship that now is festering and growing with trouble makers all over the place. There are fanatical Jews, there are fanatical Christians and there are fanatical Muslims and all of them feed each other and in the midst of all of this there are the real master planners, (i.e.) those who belong to government agencies; it could be the government of the United States of America, it could be the government of the Zionist state in the Holy Land, it could be the government that is occupying Arabia, called Saudi Arabia. Any of these or all of them together have their agents, their informers, their mercenaries, their agent provocateurs and any assortment of other trouble makers and mischief makers in the middle of these types of events. What we know for sure is there is an Islamic orientation that now has not coalesced and has not come together and now is an opportune time for those who are enemies of Islamic self-determination, especially in a place like Egypt, to play up these types of accusations and these types of media images- its not in our nature and its not in our character. We pursue the truth. We want the facts. We are not going to stand in a position in which they are going to accuse us, the Muslims, of being terrorists and we're going to apologise and hide from them. There's nothing to apologise for and there's nothing to hide from provided we know who we are and our definition is not imposed by those who seek to harm us, further yet, seek to kill us.
This khutbah was presented by Imam Muhammad Asi on 14 September 2012 on the sidewalk of Embassy Row in Washington D.C. The Imam previously led the daily and Jum'ah prayers inside the Masjid. His speeches were revolutionary and thought provoking, and irritated and threatened the Middle-East Ambassadors who control the Masjid. Finally, the Imam, his family, and other Muslims faithful to the course of Islam were forced out, into the streets. This khutbah originates from the sidewalk across the street from the Islamic Center, currently under seige.
