city of Lahore on May 27, 2009. Pakistani police pay

bomb that the government branded revenge for an
offensive against the Taliban.

A pro-Taliban Pakistani group, Tehrik-e-Taliban Punjab, has claimed responsibility for blast that left 40 people killed in the eastern city of Lahore.

A monitoring organization said Monday that the group posted a statement on Turkish jihadist websites, claiming responsibility for Wednesday's blast.

The statement about the bombing that destroyed a police building and damaged nearby offices of the Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the country's second-largest city said, the attack "targeted the nest of evil" in Lahore - the capital of Punjab province.

"A Humble gift to the mujahideen who suffer beneath the attacks of Pakistani forces in Swat," AFP quoted the statement as saying.

Officials confirmed that 12 police officers were among the 40 bodies retrieved, adding that the death toll may rise further as some of the 250 injured were in a critical condition.

The latest development comes while the army battles militants in the Swat Valley in the northwest of the country as part of efforts to push back a growing insurgency.

The month-long offensive against pro-Taliban militants in the northwest has reportedly killed about 1,200 extremists.

Nearly, 2.4 million people have fled their homes in the area, raising concerns about an imminent humanitarian crisis.
