Saudi jets kill 18 civilians in Yemen Mon, 21 Dec 2009 15:38:54 GMT
Fresh Saudi air strikes on northern villages of Yemen have claimed the lives of 18 civilians, all women and children, the Houthi fighters say. According to a statement released by the fighters, Saudi forces carried out more than 40 air raids on al-Razih, al-Nazir, al -Malaheet, and the district of Ghamra in northern Yemen on Monday. Saudi Arabia joined Sana'a's months-long fierce armed campaign against the Shia fighters in November. The Houthis are accused by the central government of breaking the terms of a ceasefire agreement by taking foreign visitors hostage. The Saudis, on their part, claimed that the fighters had attacked one of their border checkpoints. The fighters denounce the offensives as a discriminatory campaign against the Shia minority under Riyadh's auspices. The offensives, meanwhile, have been taking their toll on the locals with the Saudis reportedly venturing beyond the Houthi positions, targeting civilian areas and using unconventional weaponry including flesh-eating white phosphorus bombs. On Sunday, at least 50 civilians were killed after Saudi jets poured more than one-thousand missiles on an area along the border with the Kingdom. Riyadh claims that its raids are only aimed at targeting Houthi positions, but the attacks have so far left scores of civilians killed in the areas far from the border with the country, based on the Houthis' reports.
