Bismillah Ar-Rahmaan Ar-Raheem. Alhumdulillah. Peace and blessings on Muhammad (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam), his Noble Companions and Family. Committed Muslims… Audio on http://www.islamiccenterdc.com/apps/podcast/podcast/14312 (10-29-2010) THE RIGHT TO FIGHT BACK PART 3 We are conscious of the fact that we are approaching the annual Hajj. We have between us and Yawm Al Arafat around three weeks and it is the custom of the khutaba' on Fridays to cushion these approaching weeks with khutbahs/sermons pertaining to the Hajj. This tradition is an honourable one provided that the information that is presented is germane/pertinent information of ayaat and ahadith concerning the Hajj. But what we have is a sequence of khutbahs that do not fill the mind/heart of the listening Muslims with the information that make them the Hujjaj/pilgrims that they are supposed to be- so we are left with the task of filling the void and dealing with the real issues so that when/if we go to the Hajj we go equipped with a thinking mind and a fervent heart. Brothers and sisters- committed Muslims: anyone can detect that we, the Muslims of the world, are put in a corner and then we have accusations/calumny/misrepresentation of the facts/a barrage of bad language/vile intentions, (all of them), directed at us. One of the most favourable accusation they try to stick to the Muslims is that, (these are their own words), we Muslims are terrorists. Any Muslim knows that this is hogwash. There's no such basis for the propaganda/publicity that has filled the public mind of populations around the world equating Muslims with terror. Because these Masajid/Manabir are custom-made to bar the necessary Qur'anic and Prophetic information from our working minds we appear to be like sitting ducks for the innuendo/lies that are whirled against us. It is true that we, the Muslims of the world, are fighting people. In our normal existence we are fighting people; but when we fight we fight with principles/instructions and with a direction. We said previously the ayaat in the Qur'an instruct us to fight against those who fight against us. And you engage in a fight/war against those who engage you in a fight/war and you do not aggress/launch into wars/fights of aggression because Allah doesn't like/favour/love those who do so. (Surah Al Baqarah verse 190) Then, there are principles/values/standards that discipline the way we fight. We don't just go around picking a fight anywhere/anyhow the way the Shaytaani mouth-pieces go about us. We know that and the people on the top who are generating all this bad press about us, Muslims, know that (but) it's the large number of people in-between who either don't know it/are confused about it. We, the Muslims, take for granted that human beings should enjoy a healthy life of freedom- they dance around this word in their literature- the word liberty and freedom. They have orchestras/music about the meanings of liberty/freedom. We honour that. We know that no ideology/religious conviction/doctrine can be based upon coercion/force. None! Not even Islam itself. The ayaat in the Qur'an tell us this much. The ayah in Surah Al Baqarah says There is no factor of force there is no element of cohesion when it comes to a deeni persuasion… (Surah Al Baqarah verse 256) Another ayah in the Qur'an in Surah Al Kahf says … whoever wants to commit themselves to Allah may do so and whoever wants to take issue with/reject Allah may do so… (Surah Al Kahf verse 29) (Do) you want more than that?! You come and tell us that we "are people who are not tolerant." We tolerate kufr! Listen- brothers and sisters- they make a big issue about this and if our minds are empty their poisonous propaganda comes in to fill it up. We the Muslims who not only read the Qur'an but live the Qur'an are the guarantors of the freedom of those who so choose to object to/reject Allah in their hearts/minds. We guarantee them that right, (we didn't stop here- let's continue with this), knowing that there is a potential that this kufr that they have the freedom to practise can turn into dhulm/injustice and then wars against us who originally guaranteed them the initial freedom out of which they make wars against us. If we were to look at the Islamic literature pertaining to the use of force we can summarise the ayaat and ahadith in two sentences- the first one is that Muslims have to use force to fight back aggression. We see in today's world the different areas of aggression that have been imposed on the Muslims of the world. We said this war/use of force is done with a discipline. People don't just go out and freelance a war. You can't just do that. There's no basis for it in the Qur'an or Sunnah. Can anyone quote for us an ayah or hadith that permits Muslims to freelance a war? Never! When Muslims didn't have the capabilities of warfare they didn't engage in warfare. For thirteen years of an Islamic existence in Makkah is proof positive of this fact; but then, when Muslims began to develop their social structure (and) they had their own state/government/decision making apparatus- at that time when they were confronted with the hostile forces to them from Makkah/Al Hijaz/Arabia they matched force with force. That's the first sentence that describes when Allah tells us to fight. Fighting is not something that comes instinctively. No human being is born with an instinct to fight but some human beings have the tendency to become either hostile individuals/nations and they express this hostility towards us. What are we to do? Sit down and say "you are welcome to kill us?" Forget about Muslims- no human being who has a mind/soul will tell you "I am permitting the world to kill me" either as an individual Muslim/a Muslim population in the world. So if common sense tells you and every human being in the world that we were born to live in dignity i.e. what is called by the language of all self-determination then why is it when it comes to Muslims in the world we are denied this self determination? Everyone else has the right to decide what their political/economic/social future is going to be; no one goes to the Indians/Chinese and tell them "you are not allowed to decide your political/economic future" so why does everyone pick on the Muslims? They come to us where ever we are- whether we are tens of millions in a country or whether we are hundreds of thousands in another country it doesn't matter; the same language applies. They tell us with fancy words/subtle statements using our own literature (and) manipulating our own language "you, Muslims, are not allowed to have self determination." We tell them "well where did the word freedom and liberty for all and justice go?" But here is where these same people who praise/sing the songs of "liberty and freedom and justice for all" will not give the Muslims a public voice concerning Islamic issues! Muslims don't want to speak about internal issues pertaining to Christians/Jews/Hindus or others- they can very well speak about their own conditions; but don't we, Muslims, have our God-given right to speak about our own issues?! When was the last time you saw/heard an independent/knowledgeable/experienced Muslim speak about Islamic affairs in public? Never! It's not against any law. There's nothing on the book- you can't go to the Constitution/Bill of Rights/the local jurisdictional legal reference and pull out a statement/paragraph that says "Muslims cannot express their internal thoughts and mind in public to the world." It's always been the unspoken law has barred Muslims from expressing themselves in public. So what do they do? They bring in some Orientalists/Zionists/Imperialists/their own students who have Muslim names/colours/features to speak their language about our Islamic issues and affairs. When this goes beyond the media segment of it and becomes a political force we have not only Muslim names speaking the political language of the enemies of Islam we have them applying the policies of the enemies of Islam in our own lands! This is the second reason/justification for bearing arms. In Islamic terminology it is called fitnah. Those of you who work with the words of the Qur'an know that their definition is fine tuned by context. An ayah in the Qur'an that speaks about this fitnah says… Now this is an ayah; anyone can take any two ayahs of the Qur'an out of context and then say "look at the Muslims- they quote the Qur'an to fight." Yeah sure- we quote the Qur'an to fight but it has dynamics/circumstances/reasons/motivations. There's a lot of things that go with this. So this ayah that we quote And you engage them in war or counter war against them… ( Surah Al Anfaal verse 39) Allah didn't say wa iqtuluhum/fight them; He said you reciprocate warfare with them. That means they are in a war attitude/mood/mode/strategy and then they are in practical war against you. Muslims- we ask you "what do you?" Do you sit there and say "oh we are peaceful people." Where did you get that instruction from is there an ayah or hadith that instructs you to be a sitting duck?! This ayah originally speaks to the condition that the Muslims in Makkah and in Al Madinah were in. If you can recall some of the details of this history… Some Muslims were not living under the Islamic umbrella of Al Madinah. The Muslims had established their State/society in Al Madinah. Those Muslims who were living in the Islamic State/society in Al Madinah were not exposed to thoughts of "well wait a minute- my Islam is causing me to lose my job because I am a Muslim. I can no longer support my family because I am a Muslim." This was the condition of Muslims who were living outside of Al Madinah. So this exposed them to the Qur'anic word fitnah. They were on the verge of leaving Islam altogether because the issue right now is survival. Those who know anything about Islam know that when it comes to survival we can even express kufr/eat pork/drink liquor to survive. So when it comes to the matter of surviving some Muslims can find a rationale for denouncing Islam- this state of mind is a fitnah. So Allah is telling/instructing Muslims who have power/force/wherewithal and in this particular circumstance Muslims are instructed by Allah To wage this war to bar/ban this type of fitnah… ( Surah Al Anfaal verse 39) Where are we in today's world? We would love to be at the stage where we can say "we have an Islamic Madinah" that looks at the affairs of those Muslims who are exposed to this fitnah. If we were to extend the analogy from that historical time period in Makkah and Al Madinah during the lifetime of Allah's Prophet to today's world we see that there are Muslims who are stateless. Just like Muslims who were stateless in Brothers and sisters on As Sirat Al Mustaqeem… It is sad- sometimes heartbreaking- to realise that Muslims have become human shells (with) no substance to them. These human shells go every year to Makkah- and Makkah itself has become a shell city- there's no spirit in what is done every year in the Hajj and Umrah in Makkah. There is no mind that goes to Makkah. It is traditional figures/individuals who go there and then come back. For those of you who don't know some of the developments there, in the past couple of weeks there has been… No one wants to hold the Saudi ruling family accountable because of what they are doing- so they do it? Among the many other things that they are doing to the detriment of the meanings of the Hajj, Umrah, Makkah and Muslims, they said that in Makkah and its surrounding areas in particular, (and other places of course), there are schools or what they call halaqaat/study circles in which the Qur'an is memorised. This has been going on for a long time. On the average there's one teacher/tutor and there is 25/30 students around that one teacher who helps these young students. We are talking about 5/10/15 year old students who are memorising the Qur'an. Ok- that sounds normal. No one is going to say anything against that but the Saudi rulers/decision makers/policy makers etc. said "we don't want this to go on." Well- why don't they want it to go on? They tell us "because these teachers who are teaching these students are not Saudi Arabian teachers." Where did this come from?! Can anyone ask them where is the ayah/hadith that said to be in Makkah/Jeddah or those general areas where there are eight-thousand-five-hundred teachers who, (that is estimated), are teaching between half-a-million to one-million students the memorisation of the Qur'an only a Saudi Arabian- a person who has a document/passport/identity card that says he is a Saudi Arabian- is qualified to teach Muslim students the memorisation of the Qur'an? Where did this come from? It didn't come from Allah and His Prophet?! It probably came from some quarters in the This khutbah was presented by Imam Mohamed Asi on the occasion of Jum'ah on 29 October 2010 on the sidewalk of |
