There is new opportunity in Ontario that I think many of our later-high-school and University/College level students may be interested in.

The Ministry of Health has created a new profession called Physician's Assistant. It is only a 2 year program, which then allows the candidate to work as an assistant to a physician, mostly in a hospital setting. According to information available publicly on various websites, the salary can be $70,000-120, 000 per year depending on which specialty one chooses and which province one practices in.

It is estimated that in 3 years the program will be widely known and therefore will become very competitive. So this early stage may be the most opportune time to apply.

Physicians Assistants have existed in the United States since the 1960s, but have only more recently been found in Canada, and only in the last few years in Ontario.

McMaster University started the first Physician's Assistant training program in Ontario 2 years ago, and the University of Toronto has just started it's program this year.

For McMaster, in order to apply, one of the pre-requisites is 2 years of University level education in any field of study. The deadline for applications for the 2010-2011 year has passed, but this is an ongoing program, therefore any applications now submitted will be for the 2011-2012 year.

For the University of Toronto, it can be any field of study but must include 3 science courses. The deadline for applications for the 2010-2011 year is May 15, 2010. This is also an ongoing program, so there will be another round of applications next year.
