To understand Islam, one needs to understand that the depth with which one understand deen should grow.

For example, with the story of Karbala, no one 600 years ago would think that someone today might relate to it differently.
 
With a war, there are three stages:
 
- Winning a war on the ground
- Winning as part of negotiations during a war
- Winning the public opinion (aka media) -- this is the hardest part to win
 
For example, when America invaded Iraq in 2003, they might have won the ground war, but public opinion was hardly with them.
 
During the Battle of Karbala, the Bani Umayyad tried to sway public opinion. But the azadari, or expression of sorrow, that came out of it is sort of like a miracle. No psychologist can determine why there is azadari like that during Moharram.
 
To compare how Christians celebrate Prophet Jesus' "crucifixion," and how Shias commemorate Imam Hussain's martyrdom:
 
- While Christmas is celebrated with happiness, whereas Ashura is a very sad day
- During Christmas, gifts are exchanged, everyone is celebrating; while Shias are dressed in black, simply, and do not do anything lavish
- On Christmas there is no real depth of emotion, but take a peek inside a majlis on Ashura and you will see a different scene
 
So what? What really happened in Karbala? What can we learn, and what can we apply to our lives, and follow
 
Imam Hussain made a huge sacrifice to teach us, and if this is true, then we need to pay heed and learn our obligations for his sacrifice.
 
If we learn the message of Karbala, then we will be successful.
 
It seems that today, we may not be understanding that our responsibilities to Imam Hussain in this day and age have increased, because the times have changed.
 
On Ashura, the point was that people do not disregard Imam's action and say that he did it for this world, and for no other reason.
 
No one should say that they didn't know who Imam Hussain was -- he explained each time he entered the battlefield that he was the grandson of the Holy Prophet, the son of Imam Ali and Lady Fatima.
 
<b>Some questions to ponder</b>
 
The whole issue of bayyat, or allegiance, started the whole battle, but why didn't Yazeed insist on bayyat from Imam Sajjad when he became the new Imam?
 
Why did Obaidullah ibn Ziyad bring the family of Imam Hussain to Kufa where he knew the Ahle Bait's followers were many? Why not take them directly to Syria where the Syrians believed Bani Umayyad was the true Ahle Bait, and therefore they would not ask questions of who Yazeed's army had captured?
 
What was Obaidullah thinking? (Remember Imam Hussain knew exactly what Yazeed's army was planning.)
 
<b>The motive</b>
 
Yazeed's motive was to erase Islam from the people's minds. Here is what he planned:
 
1) Bayyat -- getting allegiance from Imam Hussain. Yazeed didn't want to rule or get bayyat from the people. He wanted to end Islam and go back to the time of ignorance, or jahiliyya.
 
Aale Sufyan hated Ahle Bait, and Imam Hussain was a threat to Yazeed's plans. If Imam Hussain followed through, then Yazeed could say, "Even the grandson of the Prophet of Islam is giving allegiance to me."
 
But Imam Hussain said, "Someone like me will never do bayyat to someone like you." Which essentially means no one in his family would ever do it, or from his followers.
 
2) Battle -- Killing Imam Hussain, and then denying Islam.
 
Unfortunately with this option, the people would probably turn against Yazeed for doing such a despicable act of killing the Imam, so Yazeed turned to disrespecting the Ahle Bait, by denying them water during the battle, crushing their bodies on the battlefield and parading them without hijab.
 
He wanted to, God forbid, prove to the people that IF God existed and Islam was the deen of haq, then all this hardship would not befall the family of the Prophet.
 
3) Prove there is no God behind Ahle Bait -- Finish respect/honor for them. Instead the opposite happened.
 
Imam Hussain knew what was going to happen to him and his family -- he saw a dream when leaving Mecca where he saw dogs and wolves tearing his body apart.
 
Imam Hussain's plan for this disrespect? Ask for help from Allah, and be patient. Keep steadfast. He and his family knew that there was a God, and that He would help them after giving such a difficult test.
 
Remember if you have a strong iman and are patient, Allah will help you.
 
Imam Hussain had the greatest sacrifice -- more than any other Prophet or Imam. Because of this Allah showed some miracles, such as Imam Hussain's head reading Qur'an when it was on a spear, blood coming underneath rocks on the ground of Karbala. Or, khaq-e-shifa, and miracles from doing ziyarat, etc. 
 
From this everyone saw that Islam was haq, that's why after all the disrespect and trials, Allah showed these signs from Him.
 
<b>Our responsibilities</b>
 
- To keep proving that Imam is connected to Allah through patience and faith.
- As followers, to keep Karbala's message alive -- a long time ago, doing ziyarat became wajib because the enemies of Islam were trying to erase any remainder of Karbala. People's tongues would be cut if they mentioned Karbala, and doing zikr of Karbala became wajib. But now that is not the case. Now we need to raise the generation that will take the revenge of Imam Hussain's sacrifice and prepare for joining Imam Asr's army.
- We need to make ready the Ahle Karbala -- those that will take revenge of Imam Hussain's murder.
 
Our responsiblities are not JUST crying or doing zikr, but speaking against injustice, and getting ready to sacrifice ourselves and our loved ones for Islam.
 
Be Karbala, and come forward. This is more important that just crying for what happened -- our responsiblities have grown because we are in the time of Imam Asr.
