Hezbollah mourns Fadlallah's passing

Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah

Hezbollah mourns the loss of Grand Ayatollah Fadlallah, Lebanon's leading Shia cleric and one of the resistance movement's principal founders.

Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah passed away at Beirut's Bahman hospital on Sunday while placed under intensive care for internal bleeding, AFP reported.

The revered cleric served as the resistance's spiritual leader following its formation in 1982.

In a statement, Hezbollah said the passing was a loss weighing heavy upon both "Lebanon and the whole world," Rizk, reported Press TV's correspondent in the Lebanese capital.

"This is a big loss. He was symbol whom our arena is in dire need of," the statement added.

Vengeful new militant group emerges in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities now believe a dangerous new militant group, out to avenge a deadly army assault on a mosque in Islamabad three years ago, has carried out several major bombings in the capital previously blamed on the Taliban.

The emergence of the Ghazi Force was part of the outrage among many deeply religious Pakistani Muslims over the July 2007 attack by security forces against the Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, a stronghold of militants.

The fierce attack, in which scores of young, heavily armed students died, inspired a new generation of militants.

ISLAMABAD: It seems the Pakistan Environment Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) is helpless against I-9 industries which are producing pollutants of dangerous proportion.

A senior official of Pak-EPA while talking to Dawn put the blame on steel mills for the rising air pollution as according to him their furnaces generated volumes of smoke.

According to the official, there were 12 steel mills running their business in the I-9 Sector while six steel mills were already in court.

The Pak-EPA official insisted: "We have provided the steel mills and other factories in the industrial areas devices to monitor emission of gases and maintain their statistics," he said. But they did not use the devices accurately as suggested which can be gauged from the fact that the dust particles and smoke in the area are visible from a naked eye, he said.

An employee of a multinational company, Imtiaz Azhar, working in I-9 Industrial Zone told this scribe: "It's very difficult to breathe in the open as the steel mills emit a lot of smoke even during the day time."

The silence is broken

A long queue of people awaited entry to the Data Darbar Complex in Lahore only 13 hours after the shrine of the Sufi saint was attacked by suicide bombers on Thursday. Their face-off with terrorism may lead to many interpretations, but essentially, those who gathered at the Darbar for Friday prayers were there to assert their right to live by a code that has existed for centuries.

This code has come under more and more pressure as the 'Gulfisation' of the country continues at a rampant pace. This process is not restricted to a Kuwait hairdresser cropping up in one corner of a street in Lahore and a Dhahran tuition centre opening up as a tribute to the days its owner spent in the land of the 'originals' to earn his bread and butter. Gulfisation of Pakistani society has many faces. Some of these manifestations are very ugly and the state is complicit.
