[shia_strength] Fw: 100th Birth Anniversary of Maulana Abid Shabbar

Dear All,

Salam and Dua,

Today, the 11th of July is the 100th anniversary of my father-in-law, the late Syed Muhammad Abid Shabbar. He was born in Karbala on 11 July 1911 and passed away in London on 25th of June 1984 (which happened to be 25th of Ramazan that day). He is buried at the Surrey Muslim cemetary just outside London.

Please recite a Sura Fateha to bless his soul and if you are interested, please visit the website which has gone live just now, few moments ago - it was prepared by my son and my son-in-law.

Mawlana Abid Shabbar had lived a very eventful life and he had travelled widely.

He had many working positions  during his life. Among them are, the Alim of an ancient Madarsah in Jaunpur, UP, India; Dean of religious studies at Aligarh University; an officer in the Department of Information, Government of Pakistan; Lecturer of Comparative Religion at Karachi University; and a travelling scholar in Iran and Iraq.

During his stay at the Department of Information, he was incharge of the Farsi Department where he dealt with both Radio Broadcasts as well as print media. He used to publish the journal Hilal for the Government of Pakistan aimed towards the Farsi readership in Iran. All back copies of the journal can be found in the archives at the library of Princeton University in New Jersey.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Syed-Mohsin Naquvi

Subject: 100th Birth Anniversary of Maulana Abid Shabbar

Asalaamu Alaikum Dear Friends,

The family of Maulana Mohammad Abid Shabbar, my maternal grandfather, has created a memorial Web site remembering his life to mark his centenary birth anniversary today, July 11, 2011.  Endearingly referred to as 'Abba', Maulana Shabbar was a qualified mujtahid at age 27 and an extremely kind and gentle human being.  He was one of the few ulema at the time who learned and majored in English, despite many in the religious establishment being against the learning of the "Language of the West".  He served as Dean of Shia Islamic Theology at Aligarh Muslim University, India and later, Assistant Director of Information & Broadcasting for the Government of Pakistan.  He passed away in Ramadhan on June 25, 1984 and was buried in London, UK.

Here is the Web site:

Bismillilah hir rahman nir raheem

Many thanks to Nusair Jafri, my elder sister's husband, and his brother, Askari, for creating this beautiful site through their web design company, Designior (www.designior.com).

We miss him dearly but his example will live through us and our children forever, inshallah.

Best,

Mohammad Ali
