ZERO TOLERANCE TO OPPRESSION AND INJUSTICE

We, the Muslims, of today's context suffer from dislocating the hadiths of Allah's Prophet. All Muslims, (regardless of anything else), submit to the authenticity and incontrovertible ayaat of the Qur'an; but many Muslims beg to differ on what Allah's Prophet said i.e. some hadiths that are in our possession. The best way to see if a hadith is true/authentic/genuine is to place it in the context of the Qur'an. So if it lives in that context we may assume/submit that it is a hadith. The hadiths of Allah's Prophet are like keys. There are many hadiths and there are many keys and these keys open many doors of knowledge/guidance. But you can give these keys to an ignorant person and tell him "go and open these doors" and he will place a key in the wrong door and he will find that the key doesn't open that door. He will go to another door and with the many hundreds of keys that he has and he will place it in another door and he will find it is not opening. He will go around doing this many times and then he is frustrated because none of these keys are working. The same thing can be said about the hadiths of Allah's Prophet. When people put them in the wrong context and try to turn them in the wrong circumstances they're frustrated because they find that these hadiths are not opening up knowledge for them. This is what happens when we use these hadiths out of context. Now we come down to these hadiths that are not applicable. Anyone who is willing to go back to the books of the Prophet's hadiths will find that we, Muslims, have some of these hadiths that are non functional. They don't open doors. Why? Because they don't agree with the ayaat of the Qur'an. We're going to quote for you some of these hadiths and then we will quote for you the ayaat that tell you that these hadiths do not fit, are not applicable/functional and they don't blend in with the Qur'an. The hadiths that we are going to quote for you pertain to a certain theme and that theme is what is the relationship/attitude of the Muslims with rulers that rule them? This is an area that is off limits. Barely anyone speaks about them because it is prohibited/against the law/traditions or against, (we are told), the fraternity/cohesion of the Muslims to speak/quote the hadiths and the ayaat that you are about to hear. Some of these hadiths are less than reliable; some of them are authentic because they jibe the ayaat in the book of Allah. These hadiths are used to pacify the Muslim public so that the Muslim public doesn't have a confident/activist/revolutionary character when it comes to those who have stolen power. One of these hadiths that we were told for hundreds of years but doesn't fit in the discourse of the Qur'anic meanings is the sahaba/companions of Allah's Prophet when they hear him speaking about rulers who have gone off course? They ask Allah's Prophet do we carry arms/fight/engage in a fight against them? He said no. As long as they standardize and socialize as salaah within your society/community. This is a hadith that is quoted often by status quo preachers to convince the Muslim public to stay detached/neutral/pacifist/non-involved when it comes to illegitimate rulers. Another hadith or a continuation to the question do we (the Muslim public/constituents/subjects of Allah/citizens) engage these wrong doing rulers in a fight/battle. The Prophet says (according to these hadiths) no. You don't carry arms against them except and unless you see a very obvious pattern of policies of kufr i.e. policies that stand for the denial of Allah's Authority and Power and you have evidence from Allah that undermine these policies. Then we have hadiths that say it is mandatory for committed Muslims to be patient with these types of rulers even if they are whipping our backs and even if they are taking our money/wealth. There's another, (they say), hadith that the Prophet is responding to a person who is asking whether it is the right thing to do/legitimate to carry arms against oppressive rulers who violate the principles/structures of justice. We are told "this is a hadith" in which the Prophet says to a person if you are afraid that the glitter of the sword of the ruler will blind you meaning obviously you are unarmed/don't stand a chance then you put your garment over your face and you say then he quotes an ayah I want you to be burdened with my wrong doing and your wrongdoing and then you become a companion of/belong to the fire. There's another hadith that they quote that goes a long way to try to diffuse the normal relationship between the Muslim peoples and their rulers who have gone into the abode of kufr. It says be Allah's subject who is killed and do not be Allah's subject who is a killer. Then they bring an ayah- a dislocated ayah- that says

And recite to them news pertaining to the two sons of Adam when they offered their sacrifices and the sacrifice of one was accepted and the sacrifice of the other was not accepted so he said "I shall kill you"… (Surah Al Maa'idah verse 27)

This is what they quote to convince you/me/anyone who is listening to them that Muslims should not think about confronting injustice and these rulers who have gone off the deep end. OK these were the hadiths. We tried to cover a good quantity of them. You will find them here-and-there. You probably will hear them here-and-there.

Now, let us tell you why these hadiths are less then authentic.

There is an ayah and this is an ayah all the Muslims agree to. Allah says

.. you, the committed Muslims, cooperate/work together concerning al birr and at taqwah concerning virtue and the power presence of Allah; avoid Allah's power presence and do not cooperate pertaining to al ithm/wrong-doing/aggression. (Surah Al Maa'idah verse 2)

This is an ayah. Committed Muslims cannot be party to wrong-doing and to aggression. We cannot be a party of regimes/governments/administrations/decision makers who are responsible for wrong-doing and aggression. The Prophet of Allah in another hadith which blends in with the spirit of the Qur'an i.e. what the Prophet says is in conformity with the thrust of the Qur'an says whoever of you sees a munkar have to change it with your hand meaning with the use of force but if you are not able to do that, you try and address/change it with your tongue meaning with your speech and communication and if you are not able to do that then you have to object to it in yourself/hearts and this last objection is the least expression of your commitment to Allah ( and in another narration) and beyond that there is not even a mustard seed's amount of iman in you. Now you can observe how these hadiths are not parallel/compatible with the first set of hadiths that were quoted. The Prophet of Allah yet in another hadith says it is not incumbent upon you to obey when you are told to be involved in a disobedience of Allah and His Prophet. You are expected to obey when your obedience is one that is due to Allah and His Prophet and it is expected of you to listen and obey as long as you are not ordered/instructed to be involved in a disobedience of Allah and His Prophet but if you are told to do that then you do not listen and you do not obey. There is another hadith that says (the wording in Arabic is emphatic. Laam at ta'keed before the verb and nun at ta'keed after the verb are emphasizers) whoever dies defending his possessions/wealth/money becomes a shaheed. Whoever dies defending his deen is a shaheed. Whoever dies repelling injustice and oppression is a shaheed. Another hadith that blends in with the ayaat in the Qur'an says you are definitely/certainly expected to stand up for/demand/authorize al ma'ruf i.e. al ma'ruf is simply that which is self evident in its value and virtue. Something that no two human beings regardless of their persuasions/religions/backgrounds agree that it is an integral/prosperous element in society. You are expected to stand for that. So Allah definitely/as a matter of certainty/for sure expects you to bar/disestablish the munkar or else Allah is going to indulge you in a punishment directly from Him. Some people will say "it is not expected of Muslims to be involved with a clash that turns bloody." Yes- theoretically, ideally and in the normal state of affairs we should not. No Muslim should be opposed/should oppose other Muslims by taking up arms, but it might happen and regrettably it might happen. So Allah says

And if it happens/reaches the extent that you have two blocs of committed Muslims who carry arms against themselves then you are instructed and ordered from on high to carry arms against the aggressive bloc of these two Islamic blocs. (Surah Al Hujurat verse 9)

And not just Islamic but committed in their Islam- so we're not speaking about ignorant Muslims, we're talking about Muslims who have the component/character of Iman in them. Allah didn't say taifatani min al muslimeen. So it could happen. And what happens when that takes place? We are instructed to identify the aggressive party/bloc and then channel all our potentials against it until it reverts to the order/instruction of Allah. What these Gandhi-type Muslims who want to convince Islamic public opinion that "Muslims don't have nerves/muscles" say is "this same ayah in Surah Al Hujarat refers to Muslim thieves/outlaws." It doesn't. The wording is clear- taifatani min al mu'mineen. Allah as He knows human nature and what we are capable of doing to each other pre-empted that by saying

and if it comes to that and you the committed Muslims are at blows with each other… (Surah Al Hujurat verse 9)

Of course, our first recourse/remedy is

… try to reconcile between these two camps of committed Muslims. But if reconciliation becomes impossible, then we are instructed by Allah who knows all and Who is wise to identify the aggressive party/side of this fight and then orient all our power against it… (Surah Al Hujurat verse 9)

There is another incident- and this you will not hear from the Manabir because the way the Manabir are today are the frontline of defence for those who have usurped power and are ruling illegally in our countries/territories. In another hadith a person comes to the Prophet and asks him what should I do pertaining to a crook/a person who threatens to take my money away? He said don't give him your money. Then this person asks what if he begins to fight with me? He said you fight back and if need be, you protect that which is yours by eliminating him. This person says if it comes to that and I was to kill this person where does he go? The Prophet said into the hellfire. Then this person asked while defending what is mine what if he kills me? The Prophet of Allah said to this person then you belong in al Jannah. Where's the Gandhi character in all of this? Another hadith that circulates far and wide amongst Muslims says a Muslim is a brother of another Muslim. Another way of saying this, (to take it a notch up), a Muslim is a counterpart of another Muslim. He doesn't turn him in/betray him and he does not oppress/deal injustice to him. Brothers and sisters, commitment Muslims: there are American-Imperialist committees/programs that are going around in Muslim countries and what they are doing exactly is to take these ayaat and ahadith out of the educational systems in these different Muslim countries. This has being going on for years, it continues as we speak and we don't see an end to it in the coming years. They get away with what they want to do. We want to quote to you a hadith from Allah's Prophet that probably will sum all of this up. This is a hadith that is quoted with an inaccurate and misleading explanation. So what does this hadith say? The following is a rough rendition of it in English. The Prophet of Allah says the best of your Imams/leaders are the ones that you love and they love you, the ones you pray for and they pray for you and the worst of your Imams/leaders are the ones whom you hate and they hate you and the ones whom you curse and condemn and they curse and condemn you. Upon hearing this the Muslims around the Prophet asked shall we break with them and shall we take forceful issue with them? He said no. But there is condition. As long as they standardise/socialize salaah among you. The Prophet of Allah did not say that as long as they pray with you. He said, (and we have to listen closely to his words). Iqamah as salaah means that salaah becomes the pacesetter/reference/hub/recourse of Islamic society, not just an effort of automatically going inside a Masjid in a certain part of the day and then automatically leaving that Masjid in that certain time of day as has been the case for so long now. That's not what the hadith means but that's what these preachers of these Shayateen want us to understand these hadiths to mean. And any hadith that does not blend in with these ayaat, as far as you are concerned, that hadith is neutralised. Allah says

Let there be from among you an Ummah a consolidated effort of committed Muslims that call for what is prosperous for human society and then they authorise the ma'ruf and they abolish the munkar… (Surah Aal Imran verse 104)

This is going to take Islamic solidarity/momentum/cohesion- an Ummah of Muslims to do this.

Dear committed Muslims, brothers and sisters…

By reading and understanding the ayaat of Allah and corresponding hadiths of His Prophet we begin to realise that there is a very serious gap between what Allah and His Prophet are saying/teaching/instructing and today's conventional Muslim existence and the customs/traditions that have smothered these original meanings. So, we have Muslims who are broken hearted and who don't have confidence in them; Muslims who are misled/blind folded/dumbed down- that's what we have. Listen to this brothers and sisters: this is the area (where) they don't want us to make the leap/go from the Qur'an and the Sunnah into today's real world to look at issues from a power perspective. There is an effort- the Dutch government is financing 3,200 Imams/Khateebs/Preachers/pulpit speakers in Yemen to explain the dangers of extremism and to deconstruct Islamic fundamentalism from now until the end of the year. They didn't disclose, (at least yours truly here did not come across), the budget. Yemen is not a very advanced society so the budget is not probably very high, but here we have in fact/progress a European budget in an Islamic country to try to take away from the public mind this notion of independence and self-ruling Muslims. Here we look at ourselves- the treasuries/budgets of Muslims are locked in transnational banks. This is what happens when Muslim become political orphans or social aliens, (which most of us are). No one thinks "why can't Muslims have a budget to try to convince Western Judeo-Christian public opinion on the vices of Zionist Evangelism or Zionism and Imperialism in their Churches and Synagogues?" The same way they are taking their war ideas inside our Masajids we should be able to take the war of ideas inside their Churches and Synagogues. But you notice- on second thoughts- no Muslim has ever breached the idea! Has anyone heard of this being discussed in Islamic conferences, symposia, in Masajid here-and-there during a khutbah in Jum'ah/Eid? Has anyone heard of this? The obvious answer is no. And why hasn't anyone heard of this? Because they always want us to be reacting to them. They always want us to be a decade/century behind them and that is where we are. If we don't pick up the fresh meanings of these ayaat and hadiths and place them in our really world that is what will happen. The Foriegn Ministers of Arabian countries yesterday or the day before had a Friendship and Cooperation Summit in China and these Foreign Ministers are so upset "why the Chinese government did not agree with their position vis-a-vis Al Quds." The official, (not practical), Arabian position is "Al Quds is the eternal capital of a Palestinian State." And like the cry babies that these Arabian officials are, they are hitting themselves on the face because China did not agree with them. How is China or anyone else going to agree with them when they are a political zilch! They can't even agree even among themselves! The Chinese are probably laughing in their political quarters i.e. "they want us to endorse Al Quds/Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian State and these Arabians are behind the scenes encouraging the Israelis to butcher the Palestinian population!" One of the Israeli officials just a day or so came and said "during the Israeli war against the Palestinians in Gazzah, he personally was contacted by Mahmoud Abbas the Head of the Palestinian Authority who was cheering him on to continue to fight and kill the Palestinians in Gaza." Do you see the gap? The Muslim mind is absent because these Masajid are responsible for this absence. These Masajid are the frontline of defence for a status quo that doesn't belong to any committed Muslim.

This khutbah was presented by Imam Muhammed Asi on the occasion of Jum'ah on 14 May 2010 on the sidewalk of Embassy Road in Washington D.C. The Imam previously led the daily and Jum'ah prayers inside the Masjid. His speeches were revolutionary and thought provoking, and eventually irritated and threatened the Middle-East Ambassadors who control the Masjid. Finally, the Imam, his family, and other Muslims faithful to the course of Islam were forced out, into the streets. This khutbah originates from the sidewalk across the street from the Islamic Center, currently under seige.
