PAKISTAN: A young Shia is charged with blasphemy -- the judge and police demanded bribes for his release
ISSUES: Blasphemy; torture; illegal arrest; bribery; criminal justice system
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear friends,
The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has received information that a young man is facing trial on blasphemy charges as he did not pay a bribe to the police and a judge of the anti-terrorism court (ATC). The witnesses in the case have not identified him as the main accused and even the sketches made by the investigators did not resemble him. However, being a person from the Shia Muslim sect the police implicated him in order to get huge amounts in bribes. They blackmailed his parents to bribe police officers threatening that the victim would face a blasphemy charge. The victim was tortured in the police station and two different prisons for no other reason than being a member of the Shia sect.
The victim is the nephew of a popular anchorperson of a television channel, who preaches Islam. The man refused to help him fearing that he too would be accused of being a Shia and lose his position.
CASE NARRATIVE:
Mr. Hamid Hussain 25 was arrested from his house at 2.30 A.M. on 21 March 2012 in a First Information Report (FIR) which was lodged six months ago on December 29, 2012 on the charge of blasphemy under sections of 285-A, 298 A and 34 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) for publishing and distributing a booklet against the holy personages and companions (Sahaba) of the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him). In this case actually three persons were made the accused namely, Ghulam Ali, Muhammad Saleem and Jameel Ahmed. CONTINUE > http://www.humanrights.asia/news/urgent-appeals/AHRC-UAC-063-2013

Sheikh Assir Targets Saida's Shia Mosque

Published Thursday, April 18, 2013
On Monday, 15 April 2013, acting Governor of South Lebanon Nicolas Abou Daher announced a decision to "ban all marches, gatherings, and sit-ins that will stir up sectarian and confessional strife."
The decision, stemming from a security commission meeting at his Saida office, seems to be directed toward Salafi Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir. The sheikh had announced a protest outside Saida's al-Zahraa Mosque complex following this coming Friday's prayers.
Sources maintained that Minister of Interior Marwan Charbel gave Assir permission for his protest so long as he stayed 500 meters away from al-Zahraa complex. Assir's Friday announcement seems to be inspired by Charbel's decision.
As for the Zahraa complex, many are surprised that it is being pulled into "Assir's madness," which put it as a list of targets. Assir sees the place as "the embassy of Iran's party Hezbollah in Saida and its biggest political complex. It is also where party figures meet."
However, sources indicated that Zahraa's Sheikh Afif al-Naboulsi resigned from Hezbollah and does not have any political or religious status in the party. Assir wants to close down the complex, which was built in 1993, since it is "inside our city." CONTINUE > http://english.al-akhbar.com/node/15568/

Marching for a more tolerant Indonesia

Members of Indonesia's largest Muslim organisation join the protest calling for the protection of religious freedom.

(
Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - It is rare when leaders from numerous religious communities gather to protest religious intolerance. But on April 8th, Ahmadiyah, Shia, Christian, and Sunni Muslim leaders stood united demanding Indonesia protect its religious minorities.

The march by some 300 people outside the national parliament was supported by the country's largest Muslim organisation,
Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).

"We are here to tell the world that Muslims are tolerant. We are Muslims, and we are part of this march to send a message that if there is intolerance in Indonesia, it is only caused by a small percentage of the population," said Joko Purwanto, an NU follower who participated in the protest.

"We need to unite," he told Khabar. "In this protest, we want to demonstrate that most Muslims are tolerant." CONTINUE >

CAIRO — The Sufis' chants rose in an accelerating rhythm.
"Have a look upon us, have a look upon us... you who were given the precious knowledge."
Thursday marked the birthday — Mulid — of Al-Sayeda Nafisa, wife of one of Prophet Muhammad's grandsons. The air was filled with eulogy poems, music and Quran recitations by thousands of her devotees from across the country who travel annually to her mausoleum in Old Cairo. They ask her for guidance and to grant the wishes they whisper to her tomb.
Hundreds of large tents were erected around the mosque to accommodate the visitors. Each tent carries a banner that shows the Sufi sect that manages it and the governorate it comes from. The Shia-Sunni divide:
Tunnel vision prevails
By James M. Dorsey

<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->
<!--[endif]-->
Synopsis

Tunnel vision prevails on opposite shores of the Gulf where governments execute policies based on perception rather than reality. They run the risk of being incapable of managing tensions that could threaten shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz as well as create domestic turmoil in both Gulf states and Iran.

Commentary

A WIDENING schism along sectarian lines between Sunni and Shia Muslims was highlighted in two recent conferences, one in Bandar Abbas, Iran, the other in Bahrain. Both were designed to promote opposing government views of popular unrest and discontent sweeping the Middle East and North Africa and the Islamic republic's role in the region. Senior Iranian officials stressed the geo-strategic importance of minority Shia communities, who inhabit oil and water-rich regions in Arab Gulf states, while Bahrainis, supported by senior representatives of the US Republican Party, dismissed domestic unrest in their part of the world as the result of Iran's interference.

Yet, the widespread popular discontent was palpable in March just metres away from the conference halls in both Bandar Abbas and Bahrain. That discontent is being fuelled by increased repression in Iran in advance of presidential elections in June and a refusal in Bahrain to address the issues that sparked a popular revolt on the island two years ago. Bahraini security forces brutally supressed the uprising that continues to smoulder in villages outside the capital of Manama and is fracturing Bahraini society. Why the Genocide against minority Muslims?

Today we stand at a crossroad as we continue to experience the plight of the Shia Muslims, a group of human beings who share the same beliefs as the rest of the Muslims in the basic foundation of Islam – the Oneness of God and the Prophethood. Unfortunately, it has been the latest trend in the past few decades that the Shia brethren across the globe have been harassed, persecuted, targeted, and killed in mass amounts by none other than their fellow Muslims who believe in the same God and the same Prophets. Indeed that is the greatest shame when we experience and realize that the most terrorizing enemies lie in our own backyard among people who follow the same religion! As with any religion, there exist different schools of thoughts and sects within Islam. However, that is never an excuse to disturb the unity that should exist within the mainstream Muslim population. It is never a green pass for Muslims to start pointing fingers at each other accusing them publicly of apostasy and disbelief, even if that is their personal conviction! It is not a justification for anyone to kill another human being simply because they do not hold the same beliefs, though they believe in the same religion!
