Abu Bakr, Muhammad Ibn al-Hussein al-Aajurree (d.360H) said towards
the end of his book ash-Sharee'ah, a monumental work clarifying the
Belief of the Rightly Guided Predecessors:
"The Son of Abu Dawud (may Allaah have mercy upon him) read to us a
piece of poetry that he compiled about the Sunnah. I will mention it
here as to increase the people upon the truth in their understanding
and resolution, by the Will of Allaah." He then quoted the 33 lines of
the Haa'iyyah poem.
May Allaah increase us in understanding and resolution when studying
this classical work.
These questions should assist you in monitoring how much you retained
and understood from the class. There are only two questions that were
not discussed during the lesson. If you have any problems answering
any of these questions let me know.
1. What is the name of the son of Abu Dawud?
2. Where was he born, and where is that located today?
3. When was he born and when did he die?
4. Why did the scholars of Islaam compile certain works as poems?
5. Why is this poem called 'The Haa'iyyah poem'?
6. Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allaah have mercy upon him) stated, as
mentioned in the class, that the scholars of the Salaf when compiling
short pieces of work discussing the Islamic creed would mention
certain matters that distinguished Ahl us Sunnah from who?
7. Can you name some of the teachers and students of the son of
Abu Dawud? (I intentionally did not mention this in class so that the
brothers and sisters could do some further research)
8. What did adh-Dhahabee and Ibn al-Qayyim say concerning the son
of Abu Dawud?
9. How many people attended the funeral of the Son of Abu Dawud,
and what is the significance of this at that time (highlighted in the
inspires the student of knowledge to be disciplined and dedicated in
their studies.
11. Why did the son of Abu Dawud start his poem with 'Hold tightly to
the rope of Allaah and the guidance, And do not be an innovator, so
that you might be successful', and where is this derived from?
12. What are the three ingredients to success in this life and the
Hereafter?
13. What did Imaam ash-Shaafi'ee say about Bishr al-Mareesee, and why?
14. What did Imaam Ahmad say about those who delve into philosophy?
The brothers and sisters are encouraged to memorise this poem which
comprises of thirty three lines. I have provided some links to an
audio recitation to assist. May Allaah make this easy.

As did the followers of Jahm, and they had been too lax (to take the

(6) And say: Allaah will make himself visible to the creation, openly,
Just as the full moon is not hard to see, and your Lord (will be seen)
(7) And He was not born, nor has He fathered anyone,
(8) A Jahmee rejects this, however, we have
As a testimony to the truth of what we say - a hadeeth that clarifies
(9) Jareer narrated it, from the words of Muhammad,
(10) And certainly a Jahmee will deny His Right Hand as well,
Without asking how, magnificent is the One God and most worthy of

(12) Down to the lowest heaven, granting bounties from His Grace,
(13) He says: Is there anyone seeking forgiveness who would like to
meet a Forgiver?
Or anyone seeking bounties of goodness and provisions, so he could be

But sadly some have went wrong and did not believe them, marring
(15) And say: Indeed the best of the people after Muhammad
Were his two deputies of old, and then 'Uthmaan, according to the most
(16) And the fourth of them was the best of creation after them,
(17) Those are the people, those who we have no doubt about,

And do not be one who speaks ill of them, pointing out their faults
(20) Since the clear Revelation has spoke of their excellence,
And in (Soorah) al-Fath are verses about the Companions, praising

Because of obedience it grows, and on the Scale it will outweigh

(31) And keep yourself from the opinions of people and their stances,
Since the stance of the Messenger of Allaah is more befitting and
