Shi'ite Islam at a Glance...

 

Succession To The Prophet

 

Islam prescribes very high qualifications for a

D i v i n e l e a d e r . H e s h o u l d b e t h e m o s t

knowledgeable, the most wise, and the most gallant

of all.

 

Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) and his successors

i.e. the Imams, besides being religious leaders, are

in their capacity as leaders of society, responsible

for all worldly administrative function. The

Prophet is the founder of religion and the Imam is

its protector. The Imam does not receive revelation,

but he is the master and real interpreter of all the

details of the Prophet's religious system. Both the

Prophet and the Imam have a special constructive

role to perform. They do not shirk any sacrifice in

the interest of the people.

 

The Prophet not only nominated his immediate

successor but also named all the succeeding Imams.

They are:

 

1. Imam Ali al-Murtuza (a.s.)

Born in Mecca on 13th Mahe Rajab 23 BH

Martyred in Kufa on 21st Mahe Ramazan

40AH

 

2. Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba (a.s.)

Born in Medina on 15th Mahe Ramazan 3rd AH

Martyred in Media on 28th Mahe Safar 50 AH

 

3. Imam Husayn al-Shaheed (a.s.)

Born in Medina on 3rd Mahe Sha'ban 4th AH

Martyred in Karbala on 10th Mahe Moharram

61 AH

 

4. Imam Ali Zain al-Aabedin (a.s.)

Born in Medina on 15th Mahe Jamadi-I 36AH

Martyred in Medina on 25th Mahe Moharram

25 AH

 

5. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.)

Born in Medina on 1st Mahe Rajab 57 AH

Martyred in Medina on 7th Mahe Zil Hajjah 14

AH

 

6. Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.)

Born in Medina on 17th Mahe Rabi 83 AH

Martyred in Medina on 25th Mahe Shawwal

148AH

 

7. Imam Musa al-Kazim (a.s.)

Born in Abwa on 7th Mahe Safar 128 AH

Martyred in Kazmain on 25th Mahe Rajab 183

AH

 

8. Imam Ali al-Reza (a.s.)

Born in Medina on 11th Mahe Zil Qa'da 148 AH

Martyred in Khorasan on 30th Mahe Safar 203

AH

 

9. Imam Muhammad Taqi al-Jawad (a.s.)

Born in Medina on 10th Mahe Rajab 195 AH

Martyred in Kazmain on 29th Ziqad 220 AH

 

10. Imam Ali al-Hadi (a.s.)

Born in Medina on 5th Mahe Rajab 212 AH

Martyred in Samarrah on 5th Mahe Zil Hajjah

3rd Mahe Rajab 254 AH

 

11. Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.)

Born in Medina on 8th Mahe Rabi-II 232 AH

Martyred in Samarra on 8th Mahe Rabi-I 260

AH

 

12. Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi (a.s.)

Born in Samarrah on 15th Shaban 255 A.H.

 

The twelfth Imam is still living but nobody can see

him in the same way as the Prophet Khizr though

living is not seen. He will reappear when Allah wills

him to reappear.
