Dear committed brothers, dear committed sisters, dear committed Muslims…

EID AL ADHA
We have a few minutes here in this khutbah and we beg you to listen carefully as these meanings have been lost in the course (and) in the cascade of time and events. We celebrate this day as a holiday one of the most celebrated days of the year. The question is many Muslims concentrate on the fact that this is a holiday of sacrifice and we have listened to many times the attempted sacrifice of Ibrahim (alayhi as salaam) of his son Isma'eel (alayhi as salaam) but what does that mean? We know from reading the ayaat in the Qur'an that Ibrahim saw in his dream that he is ordered by Allah to sacrifice his son. In this narrow relationship between father and son many of the speakers on this day (and) many of the scholars of Islam have said "this is the ultimate sacrifice." In a sense it is. What concerns us is the larger context of this sacrifice which is almost absent from the minds of over 99% of the Muslims and that's why we beg you to listen very carefully and very consciously to what is to be said.

Ibrahim, (in today's language (or) the way we describe people today), was a homeless person and he was a stateless person. This is a very challenging position in life. It's like when you look at people in homeless shelters today. One of the indicators of how much we think or we don't think is when we speak about homeless people does anyone remember Ibrahim? In 99% plus of the cases the answer is no. No one remembers Ibrahim because in our way of thinking there is no affinity between a homeless person and Ibrahim. On the other level there are stateless persons in this world. They're officially called by the United Nations and by government's refugees. They're dislocated. They are no longer in their towns, they are no longer in their countries, some of them don't have citizenships, they don't have a document that says they are from a certain country. Ibrahim was a person like that. To knock on your mind when someone speaks of refugees today or stateless people, (and you know who we're talking about), do you remember (and) does your mind tell you something about Ibrahim? In 99% plus of the cases it doesn't! This is where we lose the meaning of what the hajj is supposed to stand for. Ibrahim after a long life got dislocated from his own people, his own society and his own culture. He no longer was part of it so he went into the wide world as it is to try to find a place to settle and in this life long journey of his the will of Allah dictated that he had no children. To exacerbate the loneliness of Ibrahim Allah decreed in this life long journey up to the end of his life or towards the end of his life he had no children. Then finally Allah blesses him and He grants him (or) He gives him a child. This child is Isma'eel- the bikr of Ibrahim's children (or) the first of Ibrahim's children, Isma'eel. How precious can a person be when Allah brings into his life someone Ibrahim can feel attached to (and) where he no longer feels that he's homeless or he no longer feels that he's a refugee? Then Ibrahim takes Isma'eel this newly born with his wife Hajar to a place which we call today Makkah. Now listen, brothers and sisters, so that we can understand what we are celebrating. When Ibrahim goes to this barren place he goes to what we have today as Al Masjid Al Haram and Ka'bah. Some people in the unenlightened mind that they are in say "Ibrahim went to a place where there's no knowledge of a bayt of Allah." We go back to an ayah from Allah that tells us that when Ibrahim being isolated, being alienated, being stateless, being homeless took Hajar and Isma'eel the only thing he can feel an affinity to in life (and) he places every attachment he has (i.e.) his wife and his child in this place and he says a du'a that we should be repeating and more than that understanding in the larger context of world affairs what it means.
(Ibrahim is saying) "My Sustainer, I have settled (or) I have brought to dwell here at Your sanctified residence- O Allah have them dwell in the establishment of as salah and cause people's sentiments and passion to gravitate towards them… (Surah Ibrahim verse 37)
Listen closely brothers and sisters- this is coming from a person who doesn't have a home, who doesn't have a state. He wants the future to be one in which all the people of the world- like we said in the khutbah on Friday, An Naas; he didn't say min Al Mu'minin (or) he didn't say min Al Muslimin (or) he didn't say min al hajij- regardless of who they are should gravitate towards the progeny of Ibrahim. Now what proves this point that Ibrahim came to Allah's public home is the ayah in the Qur'an that says
And mind you, Ibrahim is erecting the established basis of Al Bayt… (Surah Al Baqarah verse 127)
Allah didn't say Ibrahim was building or founding the Bayt, He said he is, (in a sense), rehabilitating the Bayt, renewing the Bayt (or) he is erecting the Bayt. So this Bayt is, as far as we can tell from understanding these ayaat, is a timeless Bayt. It was there when Ibrahim came to rededicate it, it stayed there throughout all the ages and its still there. What is not there though is the understanding if what this Bayt means. We have had assaults on our Islam, on our iman, on our Prophet (and) on our Qur'an from all directions. One of these assaults come from us internally- our ignorance. On this day we say Allah is greater than the ignorance that we are guilty of! Allahu Akbar. The notion is (that) one of the ways to diminish Al Bayt Al Haram and what it stands for is that some people say "The Prophet's parents are Kafirs and are in the fire." Nastaghfirullah, but some people say that. This is another way of indirectly destroying the message of Ibrahim. The Prophet says I have been selected as the best from the selected best from the selected best and then they trace that back to being from the progeny of Ibrahim and Isma'eel. So if the Prophet had Kafir parents that would try to tell us that there is some type of pollution in the Prophet's relationship with Ibrahim and all of those who came before him. This is a vile message that circulates among Muslims simply because it has a lot of financial support. There's a lot of money that goes behind this to intimidate the Prophet indirectly. Let us explain to you that the Prophet does not come from a "Kafir family." First of all, we can't say like some of these, (we're going to skip the word. We'll leave it up to your vocabulary), types of Muslims say- they come and they say "what's wrong? There's nothing wrong with saying the Prophet's father is a Kafir because Ibrahim's father was a Kafir." Brothers and sisters, we're trying to bring you inside the disturbed thoughts of some people who speak to you from the Mimbar. They say "doesn't the ayah in the Qur'an indicate that Ibrahim took issue with his father?"
And mind you, when Ibrahim spoke to his Ab, which is Azar… (Surah Al An'am verse 74)
So they say "look, this is what the ayah is saying." We're not going to argue with the ayah, of course that's what the ayah says but this needs a little investigation. In the Qur'an the expression "li abihi" is mentioned around eight times. It begins with this ayah
And mind you, when Ibrahim spoke to his Ab, which is Azar… (Surah Al An'am verse 74)
And then the last time it's mentioned in Surah Al Mumtahanah. It's only mentioned once not relating to Ibrahim. The other times it's mentioned it's mentioned in Surah Yusuf.
Yusuf said "O my father I saw eleven stars, the sun and moon prostrate to me. (Surah Yusuf verse 4)
This is the only time when this expression "O my father" is used (not referring to Ibrahim). The other seven times it's used referring to Ibrahim. Now there's an ayah that's why when we try to understand one ayah in the Qur'an we have to place it in the context of other unlocking ayaat. When Ya'qub (alayhi as salaam),
… death approached Yaqub… (Surah Al Baqarah verse 133)
His children were there with him (and) he said to them
… who are you going to conform to after me? We are going to conform to the deity and authority of your fathers: Ibrahim, Isma'eel and Is'haq… (Surah Al Baqarah verse 133)
Listen closely brothers and sisters- we want your attention, So they are saying Ibrahim, Isma'eel and Is'haq. Well, his father was Ishaq! His grandfather was Ibrahim. Isma'eel wasn't his father. So the word father in the Qur'an does not necessarily mean the biological father that you are from. That's why words have to be understood in context in the Qur'an. So when the ayah is saying (and) it only said once in the Qur'an
And mind you, when Ibrahim spoke to his Ab, which is Azar… (Surah Al An'am verse 74)
The word Azar is only used once. In the other six times it is used there's no Azar because the first time it was used in Surah Al An'am it detailed who this person was. So if we take the other ayah
… We are going to conform to the deity and authority of your fathers: Ibrahim, Isma'eel and Is'haq… (Surah Al Baqarah verse 133)
that means Azar could have been the uncle of Ibrahim not his biological father. But if we don't think- and we don't think!- and we say on this day Allahu Akbar, Allah is greater than our ignorance. Allah's will remains to work its way in this life even when we are ignorant (and) in defiance of our ignorance.

Dear Committed Muslims…
Even though we confess to our ignorance- we are supposed to be celebrating this day of Eid but most of us, (and we say this with a heartache), are celebrating this Eid ignorant of what it stands for. Allah says
Bear in mind that we have designated Al Bayt, Al Masjid Al Haram, the Ka'bah (and) Makkah as a retreat for people, a refuge for people and a place of safety and security … (Surah Al Baqarah verse 125)
The current administrators of the Ka'bah, of Al Masjid Al Haram, of Maqam Ibrahim, of Makkah have turned it into a war zone. There are hundreds of thousands of troops (and) different types of law enforcement that are mobilized. What?! Is anyone going to the hajj for some type of hostile purpose? We are all going there to express ourselves as Allah commanded us and instructed us to do at this time every year. Al hajj is not only in an area of security, it's also in a timeframe of security. We are in Al Ash'hur al hurum- dhu Al Qa'dah, Dhu Al Hijjah and Muharram and Rajab are Ash'hur hurum. So what's this war mentality and attitude? And even though this is what's happening we still say Allahu Akbar because Allah is going to deliver us from these types of conditions that we are in. We mentioned that one news item mentioned "there are tens of cameras that are keeping watch over the Muslims performing the hajj" another news item a few days ago said "4,200 cameras." What are we in the hajj- going there as thieves?! We're going there as criminals to have these cameras and these security forces around?! Regardless of that we say Allahu Akbar and in-spite of that we say Allahu Akbar. Then, what do these people who try control with their armed forces, with their law enforcement, with their propaganda, with their money to control this hajj do? They have right now the garment of the Ka'bah (or) the fabric that is put on the Ka'bah, (this is them speaking, we're not speaking (and) making up things; we're relating to you what they say), which covers the four sides of the Ka'bah and there's a fifth piece for the door entrance cost them 22million Saudi Riyals. That comes out in the area of $6million! For what? We have Muslims who are starving! Who are dying! Muslims who are homeless! Remember, this is the day of the homeless! This is the day of the stateless! And you're spending 22million riyals putting a lining of silver and a broidery of gold on this cloth around the Ka'bah and Muslims are starving?! Even though they are saying that we say to them in their face Allahu Akbar.

Kullu Aam wa Antum bi khayr. May Allah have this Eid, in-spite of our ignorance, an Eid in which we can share with each other the provisions that Allah has given us in our spirits and in the physical wherewithal . Eid sa'eed to everyone.
Wa Salaamualaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuh

This khutbah was presented by Imam Muhammad Asi on the occasion of Eid on 15 October 2013 on the sidewalk of Embassy Row in Washington D.C. The Imam previously led the daily and Jum'ah prayers inside the Masjid. His speeches were revolutionary and thought provoking, and eventually irritated and threatened the Middle-East Ambassadors who control the Masjid. Finally, the Imam, his family, and other Muslims faithful to the course of Islam were forced out, into the streets. This khutbah originates from the sidewalk across the street from the Islamic Center, currently under seige.
