Subject: Re: ACTION ALERT: Anti-shia speaker on ISNA Intrafaith Panel

Yes, alhamdulillah, according to some who attended, after being asked to address his past vicious views against Shias, Yasir Qadhi apologized for his statements, preached for unity and understanding and strongly condemned the bombings against Shi'a in Pakistan at the intra-faith panel at ISNA today. Jazakallah for the efforts of the dozens of people who emailed and called to voice their concerns to make this happen.

I have yet to see the video of the talk, so will judge it when I see it. But what he needs to do next is to create a video explaining how he went through this change academically and post it to refute the old videos out there which have 10s of thousands of views. But what is more important is to
find out what is being taught regarding Shi'ism at his Al Maghrib Institute. It is not enough to simply backtrack with an apology in an effort to be politically correct, it has to be followed by action, which includes outreach to the Shia community in a sincere effort to build bridges. This we have yet to see.

We hope to follow up with him and ISNA directly following the convention and continue to push for more collaboration between diverse Muslim communities.

Best,

Mohammad Ali

Wow...I couldn't get through the first 30 seconds of the video.

Mohammed Ali, can you give us an update regarding this? He was supposed to speak at 6:15 pm and it should just be wrapping up right now.

Hello and Salaam all,

This year the ISNA Convention is conducting 2 panels on intrafaith engagement in an attempt to build bridges between various Muslim communities, which is excellent. Unfortunately, one of the members of the panel, "Theology & the Ethics of Pluralism", is virulently anti-Shia, as can be seen in the video below. This is the sort of rhetoric that is being used to justify the killing of Shias in Pakistan, and elsewhere around the world. We don't need this extremist rhetoric here.

Please contact the Director of the ISNA Convention ASAP (the panel is Saturday at 6pm) and share your outrage that such a person is speaking at the 50th anniversary conference of an inclusive, national Muslim organization like ISNA. And ask that Yasir Qadhi, at the very least, be taken off that panel. As sectarianism continues to spread in the Muslim World, the last thing we need is extremist rhetoric like that here.

Basharat Saleem, Director of ISNA Convention

Please share this action alert with others. See the full descriptions of both intra-faith panels below.

Best,

Mohammad Ali

*SAVED SECT? THEOLOGY AND ETHICS OF PLURALISM*
Session 9A
6:15 – 7:30 PM
Hall A

Sunni, Shia, Salafi, Sufi... just to name a few schools of thought within our community. Each school sees itself as rightly guided and lays claim to being the "saved sect." So how do Muslims navigate the choppy waters of intra-faith diversity? How do we remain faithful to our particularities while accepting differences? This session will examine the theology of inclusiveness and the ethics of disagreement in building the beloved community.

Speakers: Tariq Ramadan, Yasir Qadhi
Moderator: Sohaib Sultan

*SUNNIS AND SHIAS COMING TOGETHER*
11:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Session 12E
144BC

As a developing Muslim community in America, we have the opportunity and obligation to transcend some of the historical divisions that continue to plague parts of the Muslim world. Sunnis and Shias share much in common, but also have major differences. How do we come to understand the other while maintaining our own traditions? How do we move beyond difference to work with each other on the national and local levels?

Speakers: Najah Bazzy, Hassan Al Qazwani, Tarek Elgawhary, Muzammil Siddiqi
Moderator: Bahram A. Nahidian
