TRIBUTE TO AN ISLAMIC LEADER - IMAM KHOMEINI PART 1
I would like to begin by thanking the organisers for putting together this program. I would like to thank the respected Ulema' who are present with us this evening, I would like to thank the brothers and sisters who made the effort to be here and I would like to thank anyone and everyone who is involved in the participations, the programs (and) the activities that are taking place this week around the world to commemorate, to remember (and) to recall the great life of a great Imam who past away nineteen years ago this week.
We've listened to the respected scholars as they presented their ideas and their understanding of Al Imam Al Khomeini (rahmatullahi alayhi). I'm going to probably contribute to these presentations with a little different approach to the lifetime of the late Imam. We are speaking not some history that happened hundred of years ago, we are speaking about almost current events. I'm not talking about the very young ones amongst us, I'm speaking about most of us here who lived through the successes, the accomplishments (and) the victories that are part of the record of Imam Al Khomeini. We used to come here, (I remember it wasn't very long ago back in the 1980's before there was an Islamic education centre here), and there were sincere brothers who were around we used to organise programs in university campuses and at least at a couple of Islamic Centres here in the city of Houston during that time. From 1980 to 1988 there was an active war, war that was claiming hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, there were many shuhada' who passed on this war. These many shuhada' are somehow scrambled in the presentations (and) not much attention is given to them. These shuhada' were very dear to the heart and to the passion of Imam Al Khomeini. What I'd like to begin my presentation with is some ayaat from the impeccable book that Imam Al Khomeini and the leadership of the Muslims in Iran managed to narrow the distance of understanding between these ayaat and ourselves- not by theory; they weren't just speaking a scholastic atmosphere. These meanings (and) these ayaat that I will quote to you and the meanings that I will explain to you came alive by virtue of an Islamic leadership and an Islamic committed Ummah that lived up to the responsibilities of their times. The first ayah is an ayah that almost is synonymous with the cumulative success of the Islamic revolution when Al Imam returned to his homeland of Iran. This ayah was heard echoing in the presentation, the lectures the sermons, the khitabaat, the Jum'ahs, in congregations, in universities in houses- all over. This ayah is very dear to those who lived the details and the particulars of those trying years when the war was imposed on this leadership in Iran. Most of you may recall this ayah which is at the begin of Surah Al Qasass. For those of you who maybe came lately to the developments and the events of the Islamic revolution (and) did not live during the particular years when this ayah was reverberating among the sacrificing Muslims, the struggling Muslims (and) the dying Muslims, this ayah means- Allah says
And We, (Allah Subhanah is saying), He divinity wants to favour those who are powerless in the world and We want to make them leaders and We want to make of them inheritors and We want to establish them firmly on earth and We want to show the Pharaoh and We want to show the assistant Pharaoh and We want to show the troops and the militaries of the Pharaoh from these oppressed people every precaution they have taken not to see. (Surah Al Qasass verse 5)
It happens that after the course of this war, for some reason or the other it's not a time right now to go into the nitty-gritty of the events but the fact stands you can attest to it to yourself- you just need a live memory; after the war ended for some undeclared reason this ayah has been taken out of circulation. The ayah is still there in the Qur'an obviously, but it has been taken out of circulation as far as our presentations are concerned. When was the last time you heard, especially on this occasion remembering Al Imam Al Khomeini, this ayah quoted with the very significant meanings it has in the world of today? We have al mustad'afeen fi al ard. We probably have four-fifths of humanity which is to say well over five-billion human beings in the world who can be very broadly be defined as Mustad'afeen. Allah says
He wants to favour these mustad'afeen… (Surah Al Qasass verse 5)
but no one wants to speak about it seems. It turns out to be in the minds of some decision makers, other officials and yet other diplomats (that) it's wise not to speak about this issue at the time. I don't think so. I don't think it's wise to exclude any ayaat from the Qur'an pertaining to the live issues of our time especially when the number of Mustada'feen is increasing and their plight is worsening and their economic conditions are deteriorating and their nation states are failing. If we can't speak about these live issues now when can we speak about it?
Another ayah that comes to mind in this occasion. The broad explanation of this ayah is
Those who once we have established them firmly on earth… (Surah Al Hajj verse 41)
This means having power.
Those who gain power… (Surah Al Hajj verse 41)
The Islamic leadership in Iran has gained power years and probably generations ahead of other Muslims who are looking forward to the day when they can accomplish the same thing.
… standardize their relationship with Allah, (i.e. it becomes the standard of society), and they systemize the distribution of wealth ... (Surah Al Hajj verse 41)
The issue of iqamah as salah and ita' az zakah is not simply praying. Some people confuse this with the personal and private obligation of coming to prayers. Iqamah us salah is the actual rendering of as salah as a social value. There's an iqamah here, meaning (that) the meanings of as salah (and) the performance of as salah have now become social, they're no longer individual. This is a transition from the individual to the social and it occurs when Muslims have power. The same thing is followed by aata az zakah. This is not a matter of just spending your zakah as individuals, this is a matter of having money circulate from those who have it to those who need it. This is the tazkiyah of the maal.
… and they have the authority to command the common good and they have the authority to dispel the common evil... (Surah Al Hajj verse 41)
Now that they have power they can authorise the self evident ma'ruf and they can un-authorise the self evident munkar. This is a function and this is a meaning and this is a presentation of a state that has power and this is what the objectives of the Islamic revolution have been even though, as I said, there's been a time period of political and diplomatic interference here so as to take the wind out of the sail of these ayaat and these meanings.
Another aspect that comes to life through reading the Qur'an and reading the history, the days, the times, the details (and) the decisions that were made in the lifetime of Al Imam Al Khomeini (is that) we can go back to those years of war. They seem to be, (at least in my mind), reference points. There's an ayah that says
And bear in mind the time when he was expelled … (Surah At Tawbah verse 40)
This is in reference to Allah's Prophet. Who expelled him? Alladhina Kafaru.
… he's one of two when they are in the cave when he says to his companion "don't be saddened, don't be aggrieved, definitely Allah is with us" … (Surah At Tawbah verse 40)
This presentation was presented by Imam Muhammad Asi on 6 June 2008. The Imam previously led the daily and Jum'ah prayers inside the Masjid. His speeches were revolutionary and thought provoking, and eventually irritated and threatened the Middle-East Ambassadors who control the Masjid. Finally, the Imam, his family, and /other Muslims faithful to the course of Islam were forced out, into the streets. This khutbah originates from the sidewalk across the street from the Islamic Center, currently under seige.
