EID AL FITR 2013
You should emerge from this month in the same fashion that a person emerges from an exercise session. Those who are into sports will go into a gym or an exercise session and build their muscles or their aerobic capacity; in this month of Ramadhan we have built our determination and our willpower. Anyone who has fasted or has been fasting and cannot feel the result of a will power of steel and a determination of iron has missed one of the most significant accomplishments of this fast. This will power and determination reports only to Allah and that is the relationship of taqwa. The Prophet of Allah says beautify your Eids (or) embellish your Eids with these takbirat, (i.e.) when we say Allahu Akbar. A quick placement of these takbirat in our world (is that) the first application of Allahu Akbar is in ourselves. We noticed in this month of Ramadhan how we have urges and desires (and) we said to these internal thoughts and these internal emotions Allahu Akbar. Allah is greater than this inclination towards this world. Number two, when we say Allahu Akbar it means that Allah is greater than and more important than any interference between us and Him. We may have wealth and money.
Wealth and money, offspring and numbers are the ornament of dunya life… (Surah Al Kahf verse 46)
The Prophet of Allah is saying substitute that ornament with the beauty of takbirat. Allahu Akbar. This will only be understood by those who have observed their fast with their heart and with their mind. When we say Allahu Akbar we mean that Allah is more important than these transient problems that we find in our midst- problems beginning with the problems of refuges. Look, (let's be honest with ourselves), Muslims in this world have a crisis of refugees, displacement, dislocation of Muslims. When we look at this what do you do? You faint? You are faint hearted? You succumb to the status quo? You beg for help from the lesser powers of the world? That is the attitude of some people (and) that is even the attitude of some of those who have observed only a physical, a fast that did not penetrate into their conscience and into their soul. To this condition of refugees as it has become a crisis- and we don't have to enumerate the areas of the world where this exists- to this problem we say Allahu Akbar. Allah is greater, Allah is more important and we know that it will pass just like other crisis and other problems have passed.
Then we have occupations. We have lands that have been occupied. What do you do? You succumb to the powers that be? You surrender to superpowers? You beg them for help and assistance? That is the attitude of some people even some Muslims who have fasted the physical meaning of Ramadhan but they fail to gain the momentous and the motivational meaning of Ramadhan to say to this condition, and it exists in different parts of the world, Allahu Akbar. Some of us know this fact- what you just heard some Muslims know this but then they want to play politics with it and this is another problem that we have. We have it our communities and we have it in other areas of the Muslim world. Individuals who have Islamic backgrounds, who have Islamic experience, who have an Islamic orientation and ideology know this just like you and we know it and probably a little better but what they do with their knowledge? They play politics with it and we begin to have problems here at home with these politics and we have problems in such areas as Egypt
And finally we have some Muslims who have broken spirits. They are psychologically inferior. We don't know how this dwells in a person's life. You can't be a subject of Allah (or) you can't be a junior to Allah (or) you can't be in the company of Allah- remember this month (and) the ayah that says
And if My subjects ask you about Me, I am close to them… (Surah Al Baqarah verse 186)
How can you know that Allah is with you, Allah is near you, Allah is in your proximity, Allah is in your life, Allah is in yourself.
… We are closer to him than his jugular vein… (Surah Qaf verse 16)
How can you know all of this and then be broken inside of yourself (and) shattered in your psychology not being able to speak to power? How can that be? But this is what we have- the testimony of Ramadhan for those who have physically observed it is against them when they stand in life as individuals who are psychologically inferior, psychological broken, psychologically shattered; we say to them as a reminder and as an assistance Allahu Akbar.
Committed Muslims…
Allahu Akbar. Allah is greater. For those of you who attend Jum'ah prayers- Allah is greater than the asabiyah that dwells in us. This is the ultimate success, (i.e.) when we are able to defeat this asabiyah in us that has taken the shapes and the forms that we observe around us in Masajid, in the Mimbars, in the Haram in Makkah, in the Haram in Al Madinah, in the Haram in Al Quds there are asabiyat there that are working hand in hand contrary to Allah and to His Prophet. We say to these asabiyat Allahu Akbar.
On a final note, Ramadhan like every year- the Eid has become a contentious issue. Today there are Muslims who are celebrating the Eid Al Fitr, tomorrow there are going to be Muslims who are celebrating Eid Al Fitr. We don't know how long it's going to take for some of us to understand that the world has become like a village. If someone who is reliable, who is trustworthy, who is known in his community and his society for his veracity, with all of the qualifications of sighting sights the hilal anywhere in this village then what's with me or you or anyone else saying "ah- well, you know, the person who sighted the hilal has to be in my time zone or has to be in my country?!" This is a shrinking world. Besides there is enough information now to substantiate whether the hilal is sightable in different parts of the world or not. People have gone to the moon and we still are arguing among ourselves whether it is sightable or not sightable. Scientific information- it's like saying one and one is two. You argue that? You say it's a given. So why should we be arguing about some scientific information.
He has created and calculated the sun and moon and their orbits and movements making them a source or a reflection of light so that you can calculate and figure out these orbits and movements in their time frames and seasons; Allah did not create this except by virtue of the truth; He details His involvement in these affairs for people who understand and who know. (Surah Yunus verse 5)
Allah has the final word on this. We hope that some of us can mature and grow up to understand this simple fact.
May this Eid be an Eid of happiness and an Eid of closeness among the committed Muslims and may we exemplify
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are fierce and ferocious and firm with the Kafirs and compassionate amongst each other… (Surah Al Fath verse 28)
on this day. A felicitous Eid to you and to the rest of the Muslims.
This khutbah was presented by Imam Muhammad Asi on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr on 19 August 2012. The Imam previously led the daily and Jum'ah prayers inside the Masjid. His speeches were revolutionary and thought provoking, and eventually irritated and threatened the Middle-East Ambassadors who control the Masjid. Finally, the Imam, his family, and other Muslims faithful to the course of Islam were forced out, into the streets. This khutbah originates from the sidewalk across the street from the Islamic Center, currently under seige.
