THE MUSLIM AND THE OTHER-YAHUD
On this day of taqwa when saying the truth has become a rare occasion we'll dedicate this jum'ah to what may probably become a series of jum'ah khutbahs concerning the Muslim i.e. ourselves and the other (i.e.) those who don't consider themselves or don't define themselves as Muslims. We will begin by saying, (and we've said this before but we reckon it needs a little more emphasis), that in our Islam there are two components that don't conflict with each other. One of them is an inclusive component- we invite all others to this open book and to this open message and we encounter this invitation in certain words in the Qur'an
Yaa Ayyuha An Naas, Yaa Ahl Al Kitab, Yaa Bani Adam... All of these and others are inclusive invitations to humanity with its different segments and different times- that's one component we have. Another component is a component that makes us who we are. We are distinguished from others.
… It is He who has named you Muslims… (Surah Al Hajj verse 78)
Yaa Ayyuhalladhina Aamanu… So there is something called committed Muslims and then there are others in this world who are not. (Its) a fact of life. By the way, out of this comes this orientalist, colonialist mindset that saw these two elements in Islam and they worked on them. They worked on the inclusiveness of the Muslims and out of that came out things like the Baha'is and the Qadiyanis. "Oh yeah we can deal with other people. Fine. We are one big happy human family and all of this." But what makes you who you are as a Muslim went under the bus! That got trampled (so) there's nothing that distinguishes you as an individual from the other. These orientalists and colonialists who studied Islam didn't study it with their heart, they studied it with their greed and they said "oh there is something distinguishable about you. We'll concentrate that. So it is only you and then to the extreme that even other Muslims are not Muslims." (You) see how they worked on this? So out of this comes what they call al fi'ah an naji'ah and you know Islam is going to deteriorate or is going to fractionize into seventy three different components all of them are in the fire except those who the British orchestrated (i.e.) these holier than thous in the Arabian Peninsula- one time under the designation of Wahabis, another time under the name of Salafis and on and on. They are the only true Muslims in the world and everyone else is a Kafirs. (Do) you see how they worked on these two extremes? In the middle of this we, who are in the majority of Muslims, did not catch on to what they are doing to us and they did this with our own hands. They convinced some of us this is what Allah, His Prophet (and) His message is all about and these people are convinced- don't question their conviction and don't question their lack of doubt about who they are.
Now we make a transition to an area that hasn't been covered thoroughly and with confidence by Muslims who should know better. We say ash hadu an laa Ilaha illa Allah. Yahud say ash hadu an laa Ilaha illa Allah but there's two different psychologies lurking behind these words. These are words- anyone can say it. You can give it to a machine it will spit it out for you in words, you can give it to parrots and they will imitate your words! As far as words are concerned, words really have no practical dimension to them until we, with our thinking minds, are involved with the meanings of these words; that's when these words have connotations to them and denotations to them and meanings to them. So what do you say when Muslims come and say nash hadu an laa Ilaha illa Allah and Jews come and say nash hadu an laa Ilaha illa Allah? You would think "hey wait a minute here- we have a lot of common ground. This is the basic issue around which history circulates." There is only one authority and they agree to this." This issue that Yahud are aware of not many Muslims are aware of even though they are repeating the same words! (If you) come and say "authority belongs to Allah, the law giver is Allah" you would think there is a lot (of common ground). If there's this type of common ground between Muslims and Yahud then why is this world at war? (Its) because of the positions of Muslims on one side and the Yahud on the other side. They tell you, (this is what the media says), "it's all about the occupation of Palestine. This is where both sides are at odds with each other and at blows with each other. The issue of the occupation of Palestine." Obviously that is a very important issue but there's a psychology behind the occupation of Palestine and this psychology is one of those who are inclusive and those who are exclusive. Let us rephrase that- the psychology that pits one side against the other is not only because the Holy Land is occupied but because scripture is occupied! At Torah is occupied! Musa (alayhi as salaam) is occupied! These people who are doing the military occupation come and say to you and to us and to the rest of the world "Musa is ours." They're not only saying "Palestine is ours" they're also saying before that and during that and after that "Musa is ours." If we had thinking minds we would stand up and say wait a minute here- what do you mean? Come, can we look at your words of scripture and we look at our words of scripture and we see where Musa is in the middle of this? They want to own everything. Now they want to own Musa. We just want to go through some ayaat in the Qur'an and see why is there a reason why Yahud should hate Muslims. If they say they belong to Musa what do Muslims say about Musa? Allah is saying this and He is saying this to Musa
I have placed upon you an affection from Myself or a love for you so that you are going to be made with My own eye or My own supervision or you are going to be custom made by Me. (Surah Ta-ha verse 39)
If a Yahudi in his true mind is listening to this- and we're sure they have their scholars who read this but they want to bury it in the public mind- they say "wait a minute here- Muslims honour Musa." What is there if we go to the roots of this psychology or these two psychology that would make a Yahudi an enemy of the Muslim when the Muslims are repeating and reciting these ayaat in their salah and in their approach to Allah?
In Surah Maryam, another ayah that raises the status of Musa to an intimate, a Prophet, a Messenger, an Apostle
And We brought him into a close confidential relationship. (Surah Maryam verse 51-52)
If a Yahudi says "he belongs to Musa" and he reads what a Muslim is saying about Musa why does he hate a Muslim? Why do they kill us? Why is there policies of warfare and genocide in the Holy Land?
Another ayah in Surah An Nisa'
And Allah spoke to Musa in words. (Surah An Nisa' verse 164)
We have in our Islamic historical literature Musa kaleemullah. No other Prophet is like that. We honour this in Musa. Quote this ayah for Yahud and say what's wrong with you? Why is there this animosity that you show towards us when Musa has this status of honour in our souls and in our minds?
Another ayah in Surah Al A'raf
Oh Musa, I have selected you in exception to all other people with My messages and with My words. (Surah Al A'raf verse 144)
You tell us- if the Yahudi other is listening to this why should he show this type of worldwide hostility pronounced in policies, in the media, in academics, in the courts? Everywhere you look they show this raw hatred towards Muslims who are in honour of Musa more than they are in honour of Musa.
In Surah An Nisa'
And We have given Moses evident authority. (Surah An Nisa' verse 153)
Other ayaat in Surah Ta-ha from twenty five to thirty six, (some of you hear this a lot of times). The long and short of this without going into a word by word translation is Musa is asking Allah for assistance. First of all he's asking Allah for clear communication with his people, then he's asking Him for his assistance of his brother. Then Allah says you have been granted everything you have asked for.
Oh Musa, I have selected you in exception to all other people with My messages and with My words. (Surah Ta-ha verse 25-36)
In Surah As Saffaat
Peace be upon Moses and Aron. It is in such a way We compensate those who seek to do better. Both of them are from our committed servants. (Surah As Saffaat verse 120-122)
In Surah Al Qassas
She said: My father have him work for us to be compensated because the best choice is a person of strength and a person of trustworthiness, (in reference to Musa). (Surah Al Qassas verse 26)
These ayaat can go on and on. There's plenty others (that) we have here. The point is very clear. When you read these ayaat you know that Musa is not a Prophet that is possessed by a people! We don't want to hear, be it in some type of auction session, we respect Musa more than some of these Yahudis respect him. The Qur'an speaks for itself. If these Zionists of today who have hijacked the Jewish faith had an inkling of wisdom in them they would refer to the sources and to the reference of who we as Muslims through our noble Qur'an. Refer to that and see where we stand on the issue and if there is a common ground- and there is a common ground- then why do they face us with their bombers and with their tanks and with their artillery and with warfare from season to season and from year to year? These are not only words. Take the time when the Prophet went to Al Madinah. When the document of Madinah was drawn up- its called As Sahifah or Al Kitab of Al Madinah- and when it was signed by Allah's Prophet and by Al Yahud it was made up of fifty odd articles. Out of those, fourteen pertained to the Yahudi community who were inhabitants of Al Madinah. In it the words stated Yahud are a nation with the committed Muslims. What more recognition do they want? Here they are, they have their autonomy, they can go by their rules and their laws, they can practice their Jewish faith exactly as they understand it to be practised- that was guaranteed to them. Their rights and their obligations were guaranteed to them in this document of Al Madinah. They had freedom of belief, freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, freedom of assembly; all the freedoms that the committed Muslims had they had. We're going to read a particular paragraph in this document of Al Madinah which proves that Muslims honoured Yahud in as far as autonomy can go. For anyone now in the trouble making arena of thoughts who come and say "Muslims have it in their Book or in the teachings of their Prophet that they are hostile to Jews" tell them you are a liar. Even if they take some part of this khutbah out of context (or) they will take some sentences out of this khutbah and say "look, how hostile Muslims are towards Jews." That's how they work! This practical document of Al Madinah guaranteed freedom and equality and pluralism, (remember, these are the magical words of today's political science), they had it but what happened after this? What happened is a matter of history. What happened is Yahud took the wrong side in the Mushriks of Makkah and Arabia wars against the Muslims of Al Madinah and Al Hejaz. They signed on to an agreement that they and the committed Muslims together are going to be supportive of each other. They turned their back on that and became supportive of the Mushriks at the most critical time when the Muslims were living, (and this is the word that they use today in their media), an existential threat. In Al Ahzab all the forces of Arabia put together all their potential and they besieged Al Madinah. In the middle of all of that how did Yahud behave? Instead of honouring the document of Al Madinah and being supportive of the Muslims they turned supportive of the Mushriks at a time that is described in Allah's words in Surah Al Ahzaab. The days of high treason of Yahud are put into these ayaat.
As they are coming at you, O committed Muslims, from high positions and from near positions and when you began to have double vision and you couldn't see straight because of the fear and because of the threat and your hearts jumped up to your throats … (Surah Al Ahzaab verse 10-11)
This is experienced by people who are gripped by panic and threats and intimidation and fear and terror. This is how Muslims felt.
… and you, the committed Muslims, began to have doubts about Allah… (Surah Al Ahzaab verse 10-11)
This is how significant the threats was.
… it was there that the committed Muslims were put to the test and these committed Muslims came to tremble in a magnitude equivalent to the earth when it has its earthquake. (Surah Al Ahzaab verse 10-11)
(In) those days (and) those weeks Yahud turned their backs on the Muslim state that was protecting them (and) that was guaranteeing their rights, their obligations, their freedoms, their civil rights, their natural rights and their political rights. This is how they behaved! You would think they stopped there? No! They haven't stopped. They didn't stop there. When Yahud lost its position in Al Madinah their extension in Khaybar told the Mushriks in Makkah you can have the revenue of our agriculture to support your warfare against the Muslims in Al Madinah. In other words, Yahud knew militarily they were no match so now they were offering the Mushriks their finances and their economies in this life and death war between the Mushriks in Makkah and the Muslims of Al Madinah. These Mushriks even went to Yahud, O Yahud, you are the first people of scripture and knowledge, you know the difference between us and Muhammad; is our deen better or his deen? Yahud said your deen is better than his deen. You are on the side of the truth.
Then Allah reveals
Are you not aware of those who, after being given their share of the divine Writ, (now) commit to baseless mysteries and the powers of evil, and maintain that those who are bent on denying the truth are more surely guided than those who have committed to Allah?. (Surah An Nisa' verse 51)
It's true that- not because of their belief (and) not because of their creed, not because of their convictions- they had to dislocate outside of the Arabian Peninsula because of their economic, military and political engagements with the Mushriks and the treason that they committed that they had to leave. It's not that Muslims don't tolerate Yahud among them! Here we are on record saying you have all the autonomy in the world to live in freedom and equality and recognition among us but their psychology as we said is a different psychology. They turned the other way. They turned hostile. As we said, these are two different psychologies. Where do you find it? You find the most orthodox, in today's Judaic context, or the most liberal in today's context (but) can you find among them those who will come to you- the reader of the Qur'an and the creature of the Qur'an- and say "yes, my God. Look at how these verses in the Qur'an speak the truth about us (and) the facts about Musa, about Bani Isra'eel?" Will you find (it)? Is there any reciprocity here? Here we are giving high grade (and) high status- not because it's us; this book is from Allah and it honours the Prophets of Allah and it honours the societies that championed the Prophets of Allah. So we are there. Can you find any trace of this on their side that reciprocates what we have? This is the problem. The problem is not only occupying lands, the problem is also occupying scripture (and) occupying minds. That's where the problem is in its origins. Are there any Muslims who are up to the task to bring this out and place it in the light of day?
Brothers and sisters…
Our khutbah is not about polemics, it is not about a pie in the sky issue, it is trying to approximate the truth to the reality of the world that we all share- that's the function and the nature of our life. We don't live in a dream world, we don't live in our imagination- this is a real world. There is pain, there is death, there is suffering. This is the real world. There are individuals (and) there are systems that are behind all of this. When we mentioned the social behaviour of Yahud fourteen hundred years ago we remind you of their social behaviour currently along with the Mushriks. (Do) you think the Mushriks in Arabia don't have the same type of relationships with the Zionists of today? Take another look! Observe how they take their ques, they take their advice, they take their policies and they take their strategies from these Yahud. These wars that are claiming the lives of hundreds of people everyday are not acts of nature. A war just doesn't happen like an earthquake happens. Wars are things that are planned (and) thought out by men. There's a lot of input into a war before the first shot and in this regard we have these Mushriks in Arabia- we know some people are going to say "these are loaded words." We don't say these are Mushriks because of some beliefs they have- they share the same beliefs that we have; besides, don't Yahud share the same article of faith that we share? They say "we bear witness that there is no God except He" but look at their psychology. This Bandar guy used to be the Ambassador here in Washington DC and we are told "he is somewhere here in the United States. He's depressed, he's psychologically unfit and he has this lower back disc pain that he suffers from since the reported crash that he had when he was in the air force." This person is behind all of these (internal Islamic wars). He is like the Yahudi who was coordinating the war against the Muslims in the Arabian Peninsula fourteen hundred years ago (and) bringing the Mushriks together. Well, now he has his echo in this world but this time it is a Mushrik who is trying to coordinate the worldwide effort against Islamic self-determination. What's wrong? Why can't Muslims use the word Islamic self-determination in the khutbah on Fridays? Hands off Islamic lands! Hands off Islamic peoples! Hands off Islamic resources! You can't say that from the Mimbar?! Why? Because psychologically you are occupied! You are inferior in your mind with the ideas you have! You are a junior (and) you have your seniors who give you green lights and yellow lights and red lights. You're not a man of your own! So these things happen and the Masajid of the world are silent and their silence is deadly because it contributes to the mayhem and the massacres in the world today. Ninety per cent of it in our own original territories and homelands and we still can't speak truth to power? What have we become!
This khutbah was presented by Imam Muhammad Asi on the occasion of Jum'ah on 31 January 2014 on the sidewalk of Embassy Row in Washington D.C. The Imam previously led the daily and Jum'ah prayers inside the Masjid. His speeches were revolutionary and thought provoking, and eventually irritated and threatened the Middle-East Ambassadors who control the Masjid. Finally, the Imam, his family, and /other Muslims faithful to the course of Islam were forced out, into the streets. This khutbah originates from the sidewalk across the street from the Islamic Center, currently under seige.
