Dear committed Muslims
AS'HAB AL UKHDUD- UNKNOWN HISTORY
The world that we are in, in this time frame, is meant to have Muslims killing Muslims and Muslims killing those who are not Muslims and those who are not Muslims killing Muslims- as if there is some mastermind somewhere and whoever is responsible for that master plan is lighting the matches of civil wars, civil strife and bloodshed here, there and almost everywhere that Muslims are. One aspect of this is a very ugly one that is playing out, (so to speak), in Syria. There are some fanatics (and) bigots who are killing- they call themselves "Mujahidin"- innocent people. One chapter of that killing and mayhem is their assault in a deadly fashion against those who are of the Christian faith. There is a chapter in the Qur'an that speaks about a chapter in history that almost no one is aware of and that chapter is one of the short surahs in the last juz or thirtieth volume of the Qur'an in which Allah says.
Those people related to the trenches were killed with combustible fire.
As they, (as'haab al ukhdud), are sitting in this fire or they, (the power structure), are sitting watching this fire.
They- in whatever they are doing to the committed Muslims- bear witness to their own acts.
The only reason that they are taking this vengeful action against as'haab al ukhdud is because they committed themselves to Allah Who has izzah, Allah to Whom is also the thanks of these human beings and of human society. (Surah Al Buruj verse 3-7)
These ayaat in Surah Al Buruj are speaking to us about a society of committed Muslims because that's what Mu'minin means. These committed Muslims (or) Mu'minin were living in an area called Najran. To be honest to the whole subject there are three geographical explanations of where this massacre took place that is mentioned here, in these ayaat in the Qur'an. One of them says in Al Habasha in Africa, the other one says in today's Levant, Bilad Ash Shaam (and) the other one says in Najran in Al Yemen and yet another one says in Persia. After close consideration of these historical pinpointing of where this took place it appears that the strongest evidence corroborates that this bloody incident took place in Najran. Najran is a geographical area that historically is part of Yemen, Arabia-Felix; though in the past century with the effects of Colonialism this particular area was claimed and then attached to that artificial state called Saudi Arabia. In this area in a time period between Isa and Muhammad (alayhima as salaam) there was a time period when the Christian community that was not like, (what you may call), today's Christians who got befuddled and confused concerning the issue of Allah's wahdaniyah. These were, in the words of the Qur'an, committed Muslims, Mu'minin. There's no Shirk, there's no Kufr- none of these violations of iman. They were Mu'minin. There was a ruler in that south-Western corner of Al Yemen called Dhu Nuwas. Dhu Nuwas was a Yahudi ruler and as we said there was a Christian society that had developed there. They grew in numbers and that was due to the effect of two persons; one of them was the teacher and the other one was the student. They were on the deen of Isa ibn Maryam (alayhima as salaam) and they were known for karamaat. Karamaat in Islamic terminology translates into miracles in the Judeo-Christian literature. So every time they would perform a karamah they would impress the people who were seeing this karamah performed and the people would become committed Muslims (or) committed "Christians" following the deen of Isa. So the ruler became disturbed by this. Many of his subjects now are becoming "Christians" and he is a Yahudi so what he did what he took these two persons who he considered to be subversives and radicals and killed them. Then he dug trenches (or) big holes and he brought these committed Muslims to this place and he gave them a choice: either you renounce your faith (or) commitment and you can go free (or) if you don't we're going to throw you into these pits. They didn't, (as the news is recorded). These people in the thousands did not accept to do that so they were thrown into these pits. Then what happened was they were torched to death. They were lit on fire and killed in that ugly way. These ayaat that were pronounced at the beginning of the khutbah refer to this incident n which a Yahudi ruler came and killed innocent people. Historians are at a difference as to how many people are we talking about. Some say the number is as low as six thousand (and) others say the number is as high as twenty four thousand. The world at that time is not the world of today. The world today is around seven billion people (or) between six billion and seven billion. Obviously we're talking here of about seventeen hundred years ago so the world is much less population. So if we adjust for the difference in demographics this was a holocaust committed by a Yahudi against committed Muslims. The ayaat once again
The companions of the trenches were killed with combustible fire. (Surah Al Buruj verse 3)
That's one rendition of the meaning. The other rendition of this meaning is the ayah is saying
Death to those people who were responsible for digging these trenches (or) pits. (Surah Al Buruj verse 3)
Be it the Yahudi ruler or his accomplices and functionaries. How's Allah describing this?
A fire that is fuelled… (Surah Al Buruj verse 4)
Which means this wasn't a simple fire, this was a tremendous fire.
In these pits there were people who were put there to sit in it for this terrible thing to happen.
And these people (i.e. this Yahudi ruling class) in power testified to what they did to the committed Muslims (or) they are watching what is happening to committed Muslims. (Surah Al Buruj verse 5-6)
Remember, these are people who are following Isa.
These rulers (i.e. this Yahudi ruling class and king) took revenge against these people(Surah Al Buruj verse 7)
For what purpose?
… they are committed to Allah- the Allah of Glory and the Allah of thanks. He Who has the dominions of the heaven and the earth. Allah watches (or) Allah is witness to all that is happening. (Surah Al Buruj verse 7-8)
Allah witnessed this. If it wasn't for the Qur'an this incident would be withdrawn from the human mind (and) from the human conscience. Here we are as committed Muslims reading these ayaat in the Qur'an and realizing who in the world is responsible for crimes against humanity (and) for crimes against innocent people. If it wasn't for this Qur'an the mainstream mind out there (i.e.) the media, academia (and) where information is to be found would not come across this piece of information.
Those who cause this sedition vis a vis committed Muslims, men and women, and then after that don't express their regret and their guilt and their tawbah for that, they themselves shall suffer the burning fire. (Surah Al Buruj verse 8)
This awaits these criminals- past, present and future.
(Dear committed and listening brothers and sisters…)
When these types in today's world in Syria and in other places are going after innocent people- whether they are Muslims, whether they are Christians or whether they are something else- they have no basis, no foundation (and) no justification for what they are doing from Allah or from His Prophet. Because of the responsibility that we have towards innocent people in this world in this short second khutbah of this Jum'ah we're just going to read for you the agreement between Allah's Prophet and those who were followers of Isa in Najran after a delegation went and visited him in Al Madinah. Remember, the Prophet of Allah never expelled any Christians from the Arabian Peninsula; to the contrary we will listen here to the agreement they had with him, unlike Yahud and their history in Al Madinah,in Khaybar and in the Arabian Peninsula. He says to them and to Najran and to its surroundings- the company of Allah (or) the proximity of Allah and the conscientious care of Muhammad the Prophet… That's the area that is predominantly Christian. They have this proximity of Allah and the conscientious responsibility of the Prophet pertaining to their lives and selves, and pertaining to their community and society, and pertaining to their lands and property, and pertaining to their possessions and wealth, and pertaining to those of them who are absent from that territory, and pertaining to those who are resident in that territory- their livestock and means of transportation, and in their missions and even in their icons there shall not be a priest who shall be seduced away from his priesthood, and not a monk who will be seduced away from his monastery, and a bishop is secure in his position pertaining to whatever they are in control of whether it is a large amount of a large number or whether it is a smaller number… Waqih is an ancient word equivalent probably in the Christian hierarchy of religious clergymen to a bishop. This is like a guarantee from Allah's Prophet that once again is just like the ayaat in Surah Al Buruj. There is some type of mastermind behind the scenes that does not want us to honor this relationship and to be the champions of the oppressed whether they were back there in that history or whether they are here today. Compare Allah's ayaat and the word of His Prophet to the delegation of Najran with the craziness that is happening in today's world (i.e.) the fanaticism that is fuelled by Saudi Arabia and those who are the masters of Saudi Arabia.
This khutbah was presented by Imam Muhammad Asi on the occasion of Jum'ah on 3 January 2014 on the sidewalk of Embassy Row in Washington D.C. The Imam previously led the daily and Jum'ah prayers inside the Masjid. His speeches were revolutionary and thought provoking, and eventually irritated and threatened the Middle-East Ambassadors who control the Masjid. Finally, the Imam, his family, and /other Muslims faithful to the course of Islam were forced out, into the streets. This khutbah originates from the sidewalk across the street from the Islamic Center, currently under seige.
