American Leadership Initiative for Muslims 2011

(Washington D.C. - August 8, 2011) The Islamic Information Center is proud to announce its confirmed speaker lineup for the ALIM Convention 2011. These speakers represent a diverse and versatile sector of the American political diasphora, and will be vital in providing ALIM Convention attendees with valuable insight into the American political system.IIC also wishes to announce that this Friday, August 12, 2011 is the last day to reserve Hotel Rooms at the special convention rate of $89 a night.

Speaker Bios 
 Burton Wides
Burt Wides has worked on national security policy issues for more than four decades, serving as chief counsel to Senator Philip Hart, Senator Edward Kennedy, and Senator Paul Sarbanes; as Special Counsel to President Jimmy Carter; and as senior counsel to House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers.
T. Kumar, Advocacy Director, Amnesty International
T. Kumar is the Director, International Advocacy for Amnesty International USA. He has worked in several Asian and African countries and served as a human rights monitor in many Asian countries as well as in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Guatemala, and South Africa. He has also served as director of several refugee camps. Kumar often testifies before the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and is interviewed by CNN, BBC, NPR and other media outlets. Kumar was a political prisoner for over five years in Sri Lanka for his peaceful human rights activities.
Nawar Shora, Senior Policy Advisor TSA, Department of Homeland Security
Nawar Shora served as the legal director of the ADC after joining the organization as an intern in 1999. In his tenure there he fought the government over security abuses against minorities. He is now part of the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA), under of the Department of Homeland Security, to serve as senior adviser for its office of civil rights and liberties.
Alex Kronemer, Executive Producer, Producer, PBS: "Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet"
Alexander Kronemer is a writer, lecturer and documentary producer focusing on religious diversity, Islam and cross-cultural understanding. He has a Master's Degree in Theological Studies from Harvard University, where his research concentrated on the philosophy of religion and comparative religion. In 1996, he was awarded a Joseph J. Malone Fellowship for Middle East and Islamic Studies, which funded him for a study tour of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
Bridget Blomfield, Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies, University of Nebraska at Omaha
Dr. Bridget Blomfield is an assistant professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Claremont Graduate University. Her areas of expertise are Islamic Studies and Women's Studies in Religion. Her dissertation, The Language of Tears, is a study of Shi'a Muslim women's religious rituals particularly those rituals performed during the month of Muharram.
Vicky Alvarado, U.S. Department of State, Office of International Religious Freedom
The Office of International Religious Freedom has the mission of promoting religious freedom as a core objective of U.S. foreign policy. The office is headed by Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Suzan Johnson Cook. We monitor religious persecution and discrimination worldwide, recommend and implement policies in respective regions or countries, and develop programs to promote religious freedom.
 
Given the U.S. commitment to religious freedom, and to the international covenants that guarantee it as the inalienable right of every human being, the United States seeks to:
 • Promote freedom of religion and conscience throughout the world as a fundamental human right and as a source of stability for all countries;
• Assist emerging democracies in implementing freedom of religion and conscience;
• Assist religious and human rights NGOs in promoting religious freedom;
• Identify and denounce regimes that are severe persecutors on the basis of religious belief.
